Cyclops Has Declared War On Two of Marvel’s Most Powerful Mutants

Warning! This article contains spoilers for X-Men #7

In the wake of his very public death, Cyclops has just officially declared war on Magneto, Emma Frost, and in fact the entirety of the Quiet Council of Krakoa. The X-Men have become the masters of death since the formation of their island nation, but in their latest issues fans have learned that there is a limit to what they can do. The most important thing to the Quiet Council is to keep mutant resurrections a secret to the world, and they won’t allow their secret to be revealed no matter the cost. When the mutants’ resurrection program was recently threatened with exposure, Cyclops took a silent stance against the Quiet Council, but now it seems he is on the verge of open revolt.

In X-Men #7 by Gerry Duggan and Pepe Larraz, fans are given the specifics of Cyclops’ public death, showing how he was killed by Dr. Stasis of the anti-mutant organization Orchis. Previously, Stasis got his hands on Cyclops’ autopsy report after the hero died while trying to destroy the Mother Mold Sentinel. Now that Cyclops was back, Stasis was determined to kill him once more in an effort to expose the mutant resurrection program on Krakoa, though he isn’t the only one who wished to do so.

After noticing a number of known deceased mutants at the Hellfire Gala, as well as being aware of the fact that Cyclops didn’t return home from a space mission where he was presumed dead, investigative journalist Ben Urich began digging into the idea that mutants were being brought back to life. After contacting Cyclops for comment, Scott became aware of these efforts but chose not to tell the Quiet Council for fear that they would do something drastic to stop Urich from printing the story, and Cyclops was right. In X-Men #7, Cyclops makes it clear that he believes Emma Frost wiped Urich’s mind of the idea of mutant resurrections seemingly with the go-ahead from the Quiet Council as Urich forgot all about the story soon after he approached Cyclops for comment. With this supposed revelation, Cyclops says to Jean Grey, “We may be in a two-front war. One with the Quiet Council, and of course, we have a much bigger problem…” at which point Cyclops trails off about the ongoing threat of Orchis.

Cyclops has had his fair share of disagreements with the decisions of the Quiet Council as he has at times openly disagreed with the ‘mutant-first’ mindset of Krakoa. Cyclops has swallowed his opinions for the betterment of the X-Men and the entire nation, but now it seems he can no longer abide by the apparent corruption of the Quiet Council. Once he realized Ben Urich had his mind wiped of the idea that mutants can be resurrected (especially after he chose not to inform the council of Urich’s story when he was first approached by the journalist) Cyclops is seemingly done playing it safe with the council. In fact, he now regards them as one of many potential enemies.

Magneto and Emma Frost are known to be the two main members of the Quiet Council of Krakoa who bend ethical rules for the betterment of the nation. However, while those two are assuredly involved in Urich’s recent memory lapse, the entire council is to blame, and Cyclops knows that. Cyclops is simply preparing for the worst since at the moment he only has his suspicions of foul play, but those suspicions seem to be enough as Cyclops just declared war on Magneto, Emma Frost, and the entire Quiet Council of Krakoa.
