Cyberpunk 2077’s Update May Hold Clues to Upcoming Transmog System

The recent 1.5 update for Cyberpunk 2077 appears to contain the beginnings of a transmog system. Developer CD Projekt Red released this futuristic RPG in late 2020, but the game had a rocky start with numerous glitches and bugs, particularly on console versions. Shortly after the release of Cyberpunk 2077, Sony pulled it from the PlayStation Store following a flood of complaints from users. It has since been added back to the store after several updates and fixes. A little over a year later and it seems Cyberpunk 2077 is finally on the right path to becoming what players had hoped for.

Earlier this month, CDPR revealed its new-gen update with patch 1.5 for Cyberpunk 2077 on PC, Stadia, and consoles, delivering a host of improvements and new features to bring the game up to speed on PS5, Xbox Series X, and high-spec PCs. The patch list includes new weapons, additional apartments to purchase, a hairdressing mirror, and an overall re-balance of gameplay, economy, and loot systems. There are also several updates intended for the latest gaming hardware, like ray-traced local shadows, improved crowd reactions, and one in particular for the PS5, DualSense controller features. With dozens of features now added to Cyberpunk 2077, players are once again jumping back into Night City.

As reported by PC Gamer, Reddit user djkovrik has discovered a feature within Cyberpunk 2077‘s patch 1.5 called “transmog,” potentially suggesting a transmogrification system is on the way. The post on Reddit reads:

Patch 1.5 brought some kind of gear hiding system which is disabled for now and internally called ‘transmog’, you can enable it with Game.EnableTransmog() console command for head and face slots or using my Hide Your Gear mod to extend it for all slots (grab alternate version).

It seems that CDPR may have plans to introduce a full transmog system in the future, but in the meantime this feature only allows players to “hide” pieces in their face and head gear slots. With djkovrik’s workaround, this feature can at least extend to the rest of a player’s gear slots too, so long as they’re playing on PC and not consoles.

Transmogrification, or “tmog” as many in the gaming community refer to it, is the ability to change the overall appearance of a character’s gear or individual pieces while maintaining any stats, buffs, or perks on their currently equipped gear. Transmog is available in games like AC Valhalla, and is a fan-favorite feature for RPG players.  Many RPGs use a feature like this because while players love adventuring or fighting, there is perhaps nothing more freeing than customizing a character’s look without having to leave behind their favorite or most powerful gear pieces.

Despite a rough start with its launch, Cyberpunk 2077 has had a lot of positive feedback from players regarding the story, characters, and quests. Adding a new feature like transmog may not fix all the issues the game has, but it could attract more people to it. With many players trying out the game for the first time with Cyberpunk 2077‘s free Xbox trial it is clear that the efforts of CDPR over the last year have made an impact. Maybe those people who avoided the game during its rocky release are feeling more inclined to take a look at how much Cyberpunk 2077 has improved since.
