Cyberpunk 2077’s Female Protagonist Gets An Updated Look

In honor of International Women’s Day, CD Projekt Red revealed an updated image of the female version of the protagonist of the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077. Unlike the studio’s previous title, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Cyberpunk 2077 will feature fully customizable characters. At the beginning of the game, players will be prompted to create their version of the protagonist, V, and will have access to adding tattoos, changing the character’s body size, face, skin tone, eyes and more.

Although Cyberpunk 2077’s gameplay is from a first-person perspective, CD Projekt Red has said that it wants players to feel as if they’re stepping into the virtual shoes of V, right down to how that character looks. The studio is even planning to offer character creation options for body type to allow players to create transgender characters. This came after the company came under fire previously for its depiction of a transgender person in an in-game ad, although it explained that this is a dystopian world owned by corporations where everyone is hypersexualized in advertising.

The default female version of V recently got an upgrade, as CD Projekt Red shared new artwork of the character on Twitter in honor of International Women’s Day. The female V looks a little different than she has in previous iterations. Her facial features show a few small changes, and her hair is a more vibrant shade of red. She’s also got some new piercings and a lot less eye makeup. The company also confirmed that this new image would be reversible box art for the game, similar to what BioWare did with physical copies of Mass Effect 3, which allowed players to choose Female Shepard as their cover art.

Unfortunately, players still have a bit of a wait to get their hands on the game. Although CD Projekt Red initially had plans to release Cyberpunk 2077 in April 2020, the company pushed the launch date back until September 17, 2020. Reports suggest the delay was related to the limitations of the current generation of consoles, although the company denied those allegations. However, those familiar with CD Projekt Red also understand that the company has a reputation of excellence and won’t put out an inferior or buggy version of a game if they can help it.

This reputation is part of why CD Projekt Red fans are anxiously waiting to get their hands on the title. And that that wait feels like a long one. Players are longing for the world of Cyberpunk 2077 promised in teases, such as this image, that will immerse them in a world that gets more exciting with every sneak peek and trailer.

Cyberpunk 2077 will release on September 17, 2020 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia.
