Paget Brewster reveals when filming for Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 will start. On the heels of the SAG-AFTRA strike, countless scripted shows are now scrambling to get back on set and churn out episodes for long-delayed projects. Although many network endeavors are eyeing a post-Thanksgiving return to work to ensure that the 2023-2024 TV season is salvaged, fans of Paramount+’s Criminal Minds: Evolution will have to wait a bit longer for its sophomore year.
Now that the SAG-AFTRA strike has been tentatively resolved, Brewster can finally provide concrete details as to when Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 will kickstart filming after a fan asked her on Twitter. Check out her full reply below:
For context, Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 was renewed before its debut year even wrapped up. There were plans to start filming during the summer, but that didn’t push through because of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike, followed by the SAG-AFTRA strike.
When Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 May Release
Had the Paramount+ project stuck with its original filming plan, Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 would have been ready for a late 2023 release — around a year after it debuted on Paramount+. That turnaround is actually quite quick for a streaming series, as the public tends to wait far longer than that when dealing with other shows. However, with an established team coming from the old show on CBS, it isn’t surprising that the Criminal Minds: Evolution cast and crew operate efficiently.
Being a well-oiled machine may also be why Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 will be able to churn out episodes quickly. Compared to other shows that are also gearing up to return to work, there’s still a bit of a wait before Brewster and her co-stars step back into the shoes of their beloved BAU characters. However, depending on the pacing of the filming, Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 can premiere as early as late-spring 2024. In any case, showrunner Erica Messer sounded like she and her writers already had a story idea for what comes next for the profilers after the Sicarius case.
Admittedly, the significant delay is not ideal, but it isn’t entirely bad. Pushing the filming for the show back may very well be how Matthew Gray Gubler returns in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 as Dr. Spencer Reid. The actor wasn’t able to participate in season 1 due to scheduling conflicts, but now, he is finally able to. This may also be the case for Shemar Moore and Daniel Henney.
