Creepshow’s New Anthology Series Is the Truest Version of Its Premise

The hit TV series Creepshow is returning to its comic book inspirations with Skybound to bring fans a new horror anthology. For years, Skybound has best been known for producing the critically acclaimed zombie comic The Walking Dead with indie comic powerhouse Image Comics. Now, Skybound and Image are reuniting to recapture the magic of the zombie series with two ambitious horror projects. One is a new horror anthology called Afterschool, which will be released in June. The other is a new comic series based on the current TV adaptation of the horror sensation Creepshow.

Creepshow is a Shudder exclusive horror anthology that provides a creepy new story every episode. Taking influence from classic EC Comics like Tales from the Crypt, the series follows the Creep as he takes viewers through countless tales of terror and revenge. The concept originally debuted in 1982 as a film collaboration between Night of the Living Dead director George A. Romero and horror author Stephen King to bring his short stories to the screen in a distinctly comic-book style. In a pure expression of that intent, the Creep is going to make an appearance in comic stores this September.

According to Comicbook.com, Creepshow will be getting a five-issue series beginning in September. Each comic will be framed like the series as a collection of horror stories that pay homage to the EC Comics style of the 1950s. While the Creep appeared in comics before for an adaptation of the 1982 film, these tales will be entirely original. The comic has received a full-fledged endorsement from Creepshow TV writer and director Greg Nicotero, who proudly proclaims that he’s “very proud to see Creepshow find its rightful place on comic book shelves everywhere!” Enjoy the spine-tingling first-issue cover below.

What’s even better about this new series is that every issue will feature a different creative team at the helm to work on a different Creepshow story. To keep the stories fresh and the perspectives unique, Skybound has commissioned countless recognizable names to take part in the project. Some of the most notable creators that will add their creepy touch to the series will include Paul Dini from Batman: The Animated SeriesBird Box author Josh Malerman, Kelley Jones of The Sandman fame and Creepshow TV series alum Steve Langford. It’s a who’s-who cast of famous writers and artists, and there are still many more to be announced at later dates.

The first comic in the five-issue Creepshow comic series is expected to debut on September 21, 2022. Fans should be aware that initial success may see a longer series commissioned; this wouldn’t be the first time this has happened, as evidenced by Image greenlighting The Silver Coin for a full series. Creepshow seems set to revitalize the EC Comics boom from the 1950s for a whole new generation of horror fans.
