Constellation Season 2 Future Gets Intriguing Update From Creator & Star: “It’s Got An End Point”

Constellation Season 2 Future Gets Intriguing Update From Creator & Star: “It’s Got An End Point”

The possibility of Constellation season 2 has been discussed by two key figures behind the show. The new Apple TV+ sci-fi drama, which has aired seven of eight season 1 episodes at the time of writing, stars Noomi Rapace as astronaut Jo Ericsson, who returns home after an accident on the International Space Station, only to find that life on Earth has some bizarre discrepancies from what she remembers. The cast of the show also includes Jonathan Banks, James D’Arcy, Rosie Coleman, Davina Coleman, and Barbara Sukowa.

Screen Rant held exclusive interviews with Constellation star William Catlett and creator Peter Harness, separately. Both discussed the possibility of season 2. Catlett said that “I would love to dive back into [my character] Paul” and went on to share his own ideas for where the story could go, saying “This thing can go crazy!” Harness also expressed strong interest in doing a new season, saying that he knows what “the last kind of beat of it will probably be” but cautioning, “we will have to wait and see for any information about that.” Read their full quotes below:

Will Catlett: Well, it took Peter seven years to make this masterpiece, and to bring it to life. I’m sure he has a whole lot of things he wants to discuss in future episodes and future seasons. I’m excited to do it again, I would love to dive back into Paul and uncover what else is there, because Peter doesn’t share as much. He’ll come to you with eight episodes and say, “Here is what I poured out, and I think you’ll be great at it.” So, I’m excited to see where his mind would take us… I’m excited to help him continue to fulfill that dream. [I would like to see Paul] finding a way back into that reality, and does he exist in both, and how can he live in both? And the CAL, I would love to see that story unfold, because that’s a character in itself. The machine that Henry and myself are working on. What can it really do? Because it’s really giving Interstellar vibes, like, what is really out there now? You can go so far, you go back to space, the CAL cracks open, and it works the way it works. Are we now on Mars? Are we now existing in a whole different space? Are there animals involved that live in a different dimension? This thing can go crazy! Maybe I should pitch these ideas to Peter. [Laughs] But yeah, I’m excited to see where it goes. Peter Harness: Well, I would love to do a series 2, but we will have to wait and see for any information about that. The first series might have taken seven years to kind of map out, but part of that was kind of really getting to know who the characters were, and what had happened to them, what their backstory was, and the rules of the universe and things like that. So, the direction of travel is a lot easier to think about going forward, because I know all those stories now. I’ve been thinking for years about what might happen next. Were we to have many seasons of it, I’ve got a lot of it in my head, and I know what the last kind of beat of it will probably be. So, yeah, hopefully it won’t take seven years this time, because then I’ll be 100 years old by the time we finished the thing. [Laughs] Yeah, there’s a lot of different stuff to explore if we want to explore it. But I know that it’s got an end point that it can head towards. It doesn’t have to take place soon, but I know that there’s an endpoint, and the kind of direction of travel over the course of the whole story. We’ll see, it’s in the laps of the gods.

Will Constellation Be Renewed for Season 2?

Constellation Season 2 Future Gets Intriguing Update From Creator & Star: “It’s Got An End Point”

In order for the Constellation alternate universes to be explored further in the way that Catlett wants, Apple TV+ will have to officially renew it for season 2. As a streaming show, there isn’t the same robust viewer information that a network show possesses, which can make it difficult to discern how it is performing commercially. However, the sci-fi show is performing decently well from a critical standpoint, with matching 71% Fresh scores from both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

The show’s longevity beyond the Constellation season 1 finale ultimately depends on its stewards at Apple TV+. One positive sign is that the streaming platform has made a habit of renewing freshman sci-fi shows, with so far only two dramas in the subgenre having been cancelled after just one season. Their big-budget alternate space travel history show For All Mankind has also been thriving and recently concluded season 4. Below, see how long every science fiction drama show on the platform has lasted:

Constellation so far seems to be in good company on the platform. Many of the shows with similar tones and at similar budget levels, including Foundation and Silo along with For All Mankind, all have promising futures, so the same may be true for the new Harness drama. It’s possible that, with the finale dropping so soon, more news may be known about season 2 in just a short time.
