Constantine Is Dead In America

panels from Sandman #3, Constantine tells Dream he never opened the pouch of sand. (He did.)

As a direct sequel to Sandman Presents: Hellblazer, Dead in America will follow the consequences of that story, depicting how the prior story led John to America in search of a way to prevent himself and his friends from dying a terrible death. Not only that, but Si Spurrier has promised to follow up on one little white lie John once told in Sandman #3 – by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth, Mike Dringenberg, Daniel Yozzo, and Todd Klein. In Sandman, when Dream was imprisoned for decades, he lost several of his most important artifacts; items of great power, such as his mask, the dream stone, and his pouch of sand.

One of the first things Dream set out to do once he was free was to reacquire these items. This led him to John Constantine, who had purchased the pouch of sand a few years prior. When Dream questions John about it, John makes the offhand remark that he never opened the bag, saying he was unable to. As it turns out, this was a complete lie. The consequences of this lie are what lead Constantine into Hellblazer: Dead in America. Readers of the upcoming Constantine series should be well aware of what can happen when a mortal opens Dream’s pouch of sand, as the consequences are shown in Sandman #3.

Constantine’s White Lie Is Coming Back To Haunt Him

As a follow-up to Sandman Presents: Hellblazer, and building on the lore established in Neil Gaiman’s Sandman, John Constantine, Hellblazer: Dead in America is set to be a defining story for the erstwhile sorcerer. Constantine is DC’s greatest con man – but now, John’s lie about opening the pouch allowed something monstrous from the realm of dreams to slither into reality. It’s now up to John to face this lie from his past, and hopefully manage to save his own life, and the lives of his new family. If he fails, then John Constantine might not be able to escape the consequences of his actions this time.

John Constantine, Hellblazer: Dead in America #1 is on sale from DC Comics on January 16th, 2024.
