Complete Breakdown Of Ezra Miller’s Allegations & Controversies (With Updates)

The past few years have seen a number of concerning reports about Ezra Miller’s behavior leading up to the actor’s appearance as in the lead role of The Flash. While it’s not uncommon for Hollywood stars to draw negative press due to drama in their personal lives, Miller’s controversies included criminal charges and allegations of behavior that caused danger to women and children, leading to plenty of outrage on social media, including demands for Miller to be removed from The Flash prior to its release.

Unfortunately, the reality of exactly what happened in all these stories isn’t exactly clear due to missing context or conflicting narratives. It’s important to take the claims of victims seriously, so a lack of clarity surrounding the actions of Miller (who uses they/them pronouns) shouldn’t be taken as total proof of innocence, depriving potential victims of justice; however, Miller shouldn’t be presumed guilty based on allegations alone. Since the reality of what happened in many of these cases is complex and murky, this article will attempt to lay out the facts and explain the conflicting narratives surrounding Ezra Miller’s many controversies.

Ezra Miller’s Iceland “Choking” Video Explained

Complete Breakdown Of Ezra Miller’s Allegations & Controversies (With Updates)

While the incident isn’t directly linked to Miller’s more recent stretch of bad publicity, it’s important to understand because it plays a major role in contextualizing how Miller’s more recent controversies are interpreted. The seven-second video initially appeared on April 6, 2020 with limited outside context about the events leading or following the encounter. The other people involved eventually explained their side of the story, but not before Miller was involved in additional headlines including charges for harassment and assault, making it easy to assume the video from Iceland was just a part of a trend for the actor.

At the start of the video, Miller is in mid-sentence saying “…did you want to fight, is that what you want to do?” as the woman approaches. She appears to be goofing around, waving her arms as she takes two steps towards Miller. As they say “is that what you want to do?” Miller grabs the woman’s neck (the exact hold is difficult to see because she’s wearing a turtleneck sweater), pushes her back a step against a nearby vehicle, then pivots taking the woman to the ground. At that point, the person filming says “whoa, bro, bro…” as he steps in to intervene along with another previously off-camera observer.

In 2022, the woman in the video gave additional context to Variety, saying she initially approached Miller and in their conversation said “…just so you know, I could take you in a fight,” and told them to meet her outside after they responded, “you really want to fight?” She claims “it was just a joke, obviously,” and says Miller initially didn’t follow her outside until one of her friends taunted them for not wanting to fight, prompting Miller to follow her outside where the video takes place. She says after the events shown in the video, Miller was screaming “This is what you wanted! This is what you wanted!”

The woman said “I think it’s just fun and games — but then it wasn’t,” which may explain why nobody in the video seems concerned until Miller takes her to the ground. No injuries were reported and the woman didn’t press charges. While the woman and her friends admit to instigating the encounter, the actor’s reaction is a big escalation. So, on one hand, while Miller wasn’t the initial aggressor and initially ignored the joking attempt to fight, their later escalation to an actual fight doesn’t appear to be justified. The added context doesn’t absolve Miller from wrongdoing, but it does show the actor wasn’t the one instigating the encounter.

Ezra Miller’s First Hawaii Arrest For Disorderly Conduct and Harassment

Much of Miller’s current reputation comes from headlines during time they spent in Hawaii in early 2022. During this time, they were arrested twice. Miller’s first Hawaii arrest was on March 28, 2022 in Hilo, Hawaii. According to a media release from the Hawai’i Police Department, Miller reportedly became agitated while other patrons were singing karaoke and began yelling obscenities and grabbed the microphone from a woman who was singing and later “lunged” at a man playing darts. Miller was charged with Disorderly Conduct and Harassment following the incident.

Body cam footage of the arrest revealed a little more context, including statements from Miller and another patron, neither of which were included in the police report. In the footage, Miller, who is Jewish, says the man assaulted him and “declared himself a Nazi.” The man he’s referring to is shown asking police “if you guys don’t light ‘em up, I’m gonna light ‘em up.” Miller was arrested and released after posting $500 bail. Miller pled no contest to the disorderly conduct charge and the harassment charge was dropped.

Ezra Miller’s Second Hawaii Arrest For Second-Degree Assault

Miller’s second Hawaii arrest occurred three weeks later on April 19, 2022. According to an HPD media release, police responded to a report of assault at a “get together at a private residence” in Puna, Hawaii. In the released audio of the 911 call leading to the event, the caller says “I have Ezra Miller at my house right now. We have been offering our home to him and he came into our home and is threatening us right now. He hit me in the head with a chair.” When asked if she needs medical attention, the caller says “no, I don’t need medical attention, I need the police here now.”

According to the HPD, “Miller was arrested for Assault in the second degree after being located on the roadway during a traffic stop,” but later released without charges. The report from April 2022 says an investigation is pending, but there have been no additional updates following Miller’s release.

Accusations Ezra Miller Created an Unsafe Environment For Children On Their Vermont Farm

Ezra Miller's Flash and DC Comics Flashpoint

A report from Rolling Stone in June 2022 included additional claims about Miller, alleging that Miller was housing a woman and her children in “unsafe environment.” The report cites the childrens’ father and at least one other source who allege there were “unattended guns strewn around the home” and one of the children “allegedly picked up a loose bullet and put it in her mouth.” The report also cites the children’s mother, who says Miller helped her escape a “violent and abusive ex,” and “helped me finally … have a safe environment for my three very young children.” She denies the children were exposed to any firearms.

According to the article, Hawaii court records show a long history of legal conflict between the two parents, including a domestic abuse case and a paternity case against the father. The father denies the domestic abuse charges and the case was dropped when neither party appeared in court and the paternity case was “on hold last October because the father hadn’t been served.” The father called Vermont’s Department for Children and Families to perform a wellness check on the kids and they reported that the kids “looked good” after visiting the farm. No charges have been filed against Miller related to this incident.

The Grooming Accusations Against Ezra Miller Explained

Miller was also accused by two parents, Chase Iron Eyes and Sara Jumping Eagle, notable members of the Oglala Sioux tribe, of grooming their child, Tokata Iron Eyes (who goes by she/they pronouns and sometimes uses the name “Gibson”). Miller met the family during their participation in the Dakota Access Pipeline protests. Tokata denied the accusations and criticized her father’s claims, calling him “transphobic” and saying she was subjected to severe “emotional and psychological manipulation I was made to endure while in my parents’ home.”

Tokata’s parents set up an email account with “TrashTheFlashEzraMiller” as the prefix, to solicit more claims against Miller from others, using #TrashTheFlash on social media and filed for an order of protection against Miller on Tokata’s behalf. Since Tokata is over 18, her parents needed to petition the court for a conservatorship to have the legal authority to file for the restraining order without her consent. According to a Vanity Fair article from September 2022, the tribal court issued a temporary order, but dismissed their request to make it permanent and the parents withdrew their request for a conservatorship.

Ezra Miller Pled Guilty To Misdemeanor Trespassing in Vermont

In August of 2022, the Vermont State Police charged Ezra Miller with felony burglary. According to a since-deleted press release from the VSP, Miller stole “several bottles of alcohol” from a neighbor’s house and an investigation of surveillance video gave the VSP probable cause to charge Miller for the crime. The report indicated Isaac B. Winokur was the victim. Winokur co-founded the American Opera Company where Miller’s mother, Marta Miller, is one of the board of directors. Miller also credited Winokur for his role in helping them prepare to play The Flash in Justice League in a 2017 interview with Geek Culture.

In January 2023, Miller pled guilty to misdemeanor unlawful trespass as a part of a plea deal and paid a $500 fine and was put on a year of administrative probation. Superior Court Judge Kerry A. McDonald-Cady said “The conditions are about mental health, substance-free living and no contact with Mr. Winokur.” Vermont Deputy State Attorney Alexander Burke said the victim, Winokur, “is in support of this resolution. It protects his privacy interest without having to go forward with trial as well insures continued mental health treatment for the defendant.”

Can Ezra Miller’s Reputation Be Repaired After The Flash?

Ezra Miller as the Flash

In August 2022, Miller issued a brief explanation and apology for their behavior:

“Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment. I want to apologize to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behavior. I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe and productive stage in my life.”

While the apology doesn’t admit guilt for any specific allegations, it acknowledges people’s concern about their behavior. While all the allegations and headlines against Miller in the past few years are certainly a cause for concern, it’s also understandable why Miller wouldn’t apologize for any specific event, since even the cases where Miller was found to be in the wrong, the context or severity of the events weren’t always as clear as initially presented; however, the bottom line is Miller’s behavior created enough of a gray area to make it hard to dismiss any of the claims outright, despite multiple of the alleged victims denying the claims against Miller themselves.

At this point, the full truth of many of these incidents may never come to light, meaning it’s a lose-lose scenario where anyone victimized won’t get proper justice, but also if Miller is innocent, their reputation will still be stained by the many allegations against them. It’s also entirely possible there’s an element of truth to both sides of the story. The claims against Miller could be exaggerated or missing context to varying degrees, but Miller’s actions could have also caused real harm. If Miller’s quest for mental healing truly gets them back to a “healthy, safe, and productive stage,” then hopefully the same is true of anyone else harmed to any degree by their actions.
