Community Movie Return Chances Addressed By Season 6 Star: “We All Know We Want Elroy”

As the long-awaited revival gets back on track, Keith David addresses the chances of his return for the Community movie. The three-time Emmy winner starred in season 6 of the Dan Harmon comedy as Elroy Patashnik, a virtual reality creator who joined the study group during his time at Greendale while he reinvents his life and working as the head of the college’s IT Department. The Community series finale saw Elroy head off to California after getting a job with LinkedIn, leaving it unclear whether he’d return for the new movie.

While speaking with Screen Rant for Prime Video’s Hazbin Hotel, David was asked when the Community movie might finally arrive. The season 6 star revealed not knowing much about the movie at the time, seemingly indicating Elroy won’t return for the project, though expressed his hopes to do so and calling on fans of the show to push for him to make an appearance. Check out what David shared below:

Your guess is as good as mine. They don’t come directly to ask me. If they did, I would have more to tell you about it. But, you know, I hope I’ll have more to tell you about it when the time comes. Like I said, keep those cards and letters coming. We all know we want Elroy to be aboard.

When Can Fans Expect The Community Movie?

David is one of multiple stars from the original Community run who was left unclear whether they’d return for the upcoming movie. Season 5 star Jonathan Banks has been a fan-favorite call for a return to the franchise, particularly after it was left unclear whether he left his job at Greendale or died off-screen. Fellow season 6 star Paget Brewster, who played consultant Frankie Dart, also previously expressed to Screen Rant there would be “no question” of her wanting to return for the movie before it was officially announced by Peacock, though she has yet to be confirmed to appear in the movie:

Regardless of who does return, the long wait for the Community movie does look to be nearing an end. Joel McHale previously told Screen Rant in December 2023 that it seemed likely that filming would kick off in Summer 2024 now that the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes had concluded, though noted scheduling might prove an issue for its large ensemble roster. The Jeff Winger actor also shared his thoughts that this could lead to a Holiday 2024 release window, though admitted “I might be talking out of my a–“.

Should the Community movie make a Summer 2024 filming start, a release later the same year does seem possible for it. Even during some of the show’s more tumultuous seasons, the turnaround time between production and release was typically within six months, though unlike the show, the movie isn’t beholden to a traditional TV schedule, making it very possible for the latter to premiere sometime during the Holiday 2024 season.
