Command & Conquer Remastered Revealed by EA, Red Alert Next

Command & Conquer is making its way back to PC with remastered versions of Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert. A month ago, EA Games revealed plans to bring the franchise back, stating they were aware it was a direction fans wished them to go. Now they’ve made it official with the announcement that two games will be remastered for longtime fans of the series.

The Command & Conquer franchise got its start back in 1995. The series was among the earliest real-time strategy games and continues to influence the genre to this day. But when things began to go south for developer Westwood, they were bought out by Electronic Arts. The change did little to help the franchise. Following a series disappointing releases and cancelled projects, it looked as Command & Conquer was finished for good. Then it was announced at E3 2018 that the game was returning with the release of Command & Conquer: Rivals, a mobile strategy game. But the response wasn’t what EA was expecting, with the majority of fans lambasting the game long before its launch. For players disappointed in Rivals they now have something to look forward to, the remasters.

EA announced their plans to remaster not just the original game (sometimes referred to as Tiberian Dawn) but the first Red Alert game as well. The games will be released with three expansion packs, Covert Ops, Counterstrike, and Aftermath in a remastered collection, one without any microtransactions.

EA revealed that they will not be working alone but are teaming up with Petroglyph Games. Petroglyph was created by employees of Westwood Studios. EA hopes that by working closely with some of the team originally behind Command & Conquer, the remasters will retain the original feel of the game. In response to fan comments, EA is also adding Frank Klepacki to the team as Composer and Audio Director. Klepacki was the creator behind the music of numerous Westwood games, including Command & Conquer.

Considering the success of other remasters, like SEGA and Capcom, it’s not much of a surprise that EA wants to make a quick buck over a version of their own. But it will be some time before Command & Conquer remastered his shelves. Development has yet to begin, so fans of the franchise will have to wait a while yet. Until then, EA tells gamers to keep the comments coming on Reddit and other community sites to help them make the best games possible. Hopefully, Command & Conquered remastered will at long last give fans of the franchise the games they’ve been waiting for.
