Comic-Con At Home 2021 offered a slew of new trailers for upcoming movies and TV shows, so which are worth watching? Once again, Comic-Con is contained to screens for the sake of public safety this year. However, that has not stopped the world’s premier convention from offering up an impressive slate of movie and television teasers and trailers.
As always, some of these trailers came with definitive release dates while others only offered a vague idea of when the projects would arrive. One of the most exciting arrivals was the first trailer for Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead spinoff Army of Thieves, but that wasn’t all fans had to look forward to this weekend. All told, the event offered no less than three new movie trailers and eighteen television teasers.
These range from anarchic animated comedy to horror television series, as well a wide variety of offerings in-between. Early looks at the return of Child’s Play star Chucky and the eponymous antihero Dexter were on offer, as well as some long-awaited sci-fi television arrivals. Comic-Con mainstays Doctor Who and Star Trek were also well-represented, as proven by a look at every movie and television trailer from the event.
Horror Noire
After the success of Shudder’s documentary Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror, the streaming service released a teaser for the anthology horror Horror Noire. This anthology will feature six shorts by six filmmakers and is sure to excite fans of the acclaimed documentary. Horror Noire will be released on October 14.
Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time
The final Evangelion movie was briefly teased by Amazon. Although the trailer only shows the cast walking across a barren wasteland, this will still likely be enough to get fans of the cult manga franchise hyped. Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time arrives on August 13.
DC’s Legends of Tomorrow 6
The likably silly Legends of Tomorrow will return for its sixth season soon. The CW hit’s trailer sees the cast tripping on mushrooms, facing off against alien bowlers, and having a wedding cut short by the arrival of ill-timed villains. The campy, goofy tone of this hit is front and center in this trailer, which is sure to excite fans.
Army of Thieves
The success of Zack Snyder’s zombie horror Army of the Dead ensured his ambitious franchise plans will come to fruition, as proven by the upcoming release of Army of Thieves. This prequel sees Matthias Schweighöfer’s Dieter return to pull off another impressive heist, with the actor both directing and starring in the glitzy thriller. No release date has been set yet, but Army of Thieves should arrive on Netflix soon according to its teaser trailer.
Doctor Who 13
Back to likably silly sci-fi, Doctor Who’s long-awaited season 13 debuted its first teaser at Comic-Con At Home, too. The season marks the return of Jodie Whitaker’s female Doctor as well as the arrival of cast newcomer Jacob Anderson, who many viewers will recognize as Grey Worm of Game of Thrones fame. The series has no set release date yet, with BBC America promising it will return “later this year”
Lucifer
Urban fantasy series Lucifer has a release date for its final season, arriving on September 10. That’s about all that fans know for sure, with the cryptic trailer revealing plenty of sneaky peeks but no clear hints about the plot of the season. The lone line of dialogue does suggest a relocation for the eponymous antihero, but outside of leaving the City of Angels, what Lucifer is up to in season 4 remains a mystery.
The Walking Dead
Like the shambling zombies who star in the series, the mega-hit The Walking Dead is set to return for its eleventh season. This action-packed teaser sees the survivors facing off against more walkers than ever in a season that may have the show’s highest body count yet. AMC viewers will see The Walking Dead on August 22.
Walking Dead: World Beyond
The Walking Dead’s second spinoff World Beyond has earned itself a second season. Its brief teaser sees the heroes discover that Omaha is not the safe haven they had hoped for. Fans will see more when the show returns on October 3.
Chucky
Child’s Play star Chucky has not been seen in his original form since 2017’s Cult of Chucky. However, this small screen re-invention of the slasher sees him invade a suburban home after an unassuming kid picks up the killer doll at a garage sale. Expect gory action and dark comedy when Chucky arrives on October 12.
Dexter
After an infamous ending that turned the serial-killer-killer into a lumberjack, Dexter is finally back. The trailer for Dexter season 9 offered fans an in-depth glance into the title character’s attempt to hold off his bloodlust and maintain his secret identity after relocating to a small town. Dexter returns on November 7.
Day of the Dead
The Day of the Dead movies are a mixed bag, but this small-screen reinvention of Romero’s zombies hopes to fare better with audiences. Despite the movie of the same name taking place long after the initial zombie outbreak, this trailer makes it clear that television’s Day of the Dead will depict the original apocalypse. Fans will find out what else the SyFy series has changed when it arrives in October.
Fear the Walking Dead
Fear the Walking Dead, the Walking Dead’s first spinoff, has reached its seventh season. The brief teaser for the upcoming season sees John and June hiding out in a house where an ill-timed earthquake reveals creepy secrets. Fear the Walking Dead returns on October 17.
Blade Runner: Black Lotus
Despite the underperformance of Blade Runner 2049, the Blade Runner franchise is back in animated form. Blade Runner: Black Lotus sees the title character fighting off enemies and attempting to work out the source of her mysterious martial arts skills. This lushly animated Adult Swim series arrives sometime in the Fall.
Heels
Likely influenced by the success of GLOW, Heels is an upcoming drama that will focus on the other side of professional wrestling. Starring Stephen Amell as a villainous professional wrestler and Alexander Ludwig as his heroic “face” brother, the show will focus on the titular phenomenon of “heels” i.e wrestlers who take on the bad guy role in scripted matches. Heels will premiere on August 15 on Starz.
Ultra City Smiths
An authentically original AMC effort, Ultra City Smiths is a stop-motion noir mystery musical comedy. This surreal series sees Set David Mills (no relation to Brad Pitt’s Se7en character) investigate a local politician’s shady disappearance. The animated series debuts on AMC soon.
Star Trek: Prodigy
After the success of Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy will be another animated spinoff for the franchise. Debuting this Fall on Nickelodeon and Paramount+, the show follows a group of teens who commandeer a trashed Federation ship and set off on a slew of misadventures. The brief teaser sees Kate Mulgrew’s Captain Janeway return in animated form.
Slasher: Flesh & Blood
The Canadian anthology horror Slasher has reached season 4 and brought aboard a legendary guest star for the ride. This time around, David Cronenberg plays a wealthy old patriarch who is dying and must decide which family members get his fortune. Expect a lot of blood and backstabbing when this arrives on Shudder September 12.
Leverage: Redemption
The Leverage spinoff Leverage: Redemption premiered earlier this year, and sees its reformed criminals put their skills to good use by helping out the little guy. The remaining episodes of the series will be released in Fall, prompting IMDb to share a brief teaser for the first. This outing guest stars LeVar Burton, but not a lot has been revealed about its plot.
SOZ: Soldiers Or Zombies
Arriving on Amazon Prime on August 6th, SOZ: Soldiers Or Zombies is a television horror series that offers exactly what its title promises. Originally entitled Soldados o Zombies, this dark Mexican sci-fi horror wonders what would happen if a military experiment to create zombies accidentally invented an army of the undead. Expect George A Romero-style satire as well as plenty of gory action.
Star Trek: Lower Decks 2
After a successful first season, the animated comedy spinoff Star Trek: Lower Decks is set to return with a second season this August. In some exciting news for fans, the season’s two-minute teaser promised the Borg and the Ferengi would be back. The Borg were some of The Next Generation’s most formidable foes, so seeing them in a more comedic light will be a fun change of pace for fans.
The Harper House
The Harper House is an anarchic animated comedy that sees a well-to-do family relocate to the titular haunted house when they fall on hard times. Full of Rick & Morty-style genre parodies and madcap action, this brief teaser promises a lot of fun from the Brad Neely series. According to the Comic-Con At Home 2021 trailer, season 1 of The Harper House is set to premiere on September 16, and stars Tatiana Maslany, Gabourey Sidibe, and Jason Lee.
