San Diego Comic-Con is the biggest entertainment event of the year, an opportunity for networks and studios to drop countless reveals. Over the course of four days, fans get the chance to attend innumerable panels, interact with the cast and crew of their favorite films and shows, and watch exclusive footage. A lot of companies deliberately choose to release new trailers as part of SDCC.

Well over 100,000 film-and-TV lovers attend SDCC, while the rest of the world settle for watching the internet for the latest breaking news. Surprise First Shazam! Trailer

It had long been rumored that Warner Bros. would drop footage for Shazam! at their panel on Saturday, but few had expected the studio to show an actual trailer – let alone release it online. It was absolutely hilarious, assuring viewers that the upcoming DC film slate will embrace a wide range of tones and styles.

The Plot of Glass

The Glass trailer offered a first look at one of the most eagerly-anticipated thrillers of the next year. A sequel to M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable and Split, Glass sets Bruce Willis’s David Dunn and Samuel L. Jackson’s Elijah “Mr. Glass” Price against James McAvoy’s Kevin Crumb/The Beast. Shyamalan revealed that the current cut of the film includes 21 of Kevin’s different personalities.

Godzilla’s Enemies Revealed

The first trailer for Godzilla: King of Monsters dropped on Saturday, and offered a spectacular first glimpse of the monsters set to appear in the film. Rodan, Mothra and Ghidorah are classic Toho creations but have never been seen in an American film. Although Godzilla 2‘s trailer mostly hid them behind smoke, we now have a much better idea of how they’ve been adapated.

Aquaman Got Two Trailers

On Saturday, the Warner Bros. panel dropped the much-awaited first trailer for Aquaman, giving viewers their first glimpse of Atlantis. However, an extended trailer was also screened to Hall H, giving a look at Aquaman in his classic orange-and-green costume. Although it’s not available online, the general response has been that this exclusive footage was far better than the actual trailer.

A First Look At Nicolas Flamel in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

Nicolas Flamel talks to Jacob Kowalsky in Fantastic Beasts The Crimes of Grindelwald

The Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald section of Warner Bros’ panel didn’t reveal much, but the trailer certainly did. Most prominently, it offered viewers their first glimpse of Nicolas Flamel, the ancient alchemist who created the Philosopher’s Stone. The character is played by 55-year-old actor Brontis Jodorowsky, who has clearly been aged significantly for the role. Another scene in the trailer, featuring the Mirror of Erised, suggested that the film may actually address Dumbledore’s secret love for Grindelwald.

Deadpool 2 Super Duper Extended Cut Includes Baby Hitler and Teases Wolverine’s Return

In that rare Hall H panel for a released movie, Fox confirmed that the “Super Duper Cut” of Deadpool 2 will include the infamous Baby Hitler scene, in which Deadpool travels back in time to kill Hitler when he was just a baby. An altered version of the post-credits scene also teases the potential return of Wolverine.

Starscream Isn’t in Bumblebee After All

Bumblebee‘s Comic-Con footage gave a much greater sense of tone (and Optimus Prime’s role), but the villains are where the big reveals came. Director Travis Knight gave details about the film’s Decepticons, including triple-changers Shatter and Dropkick. Knight also revealed that the Decepticon jet seen in the trailers isn’t Starscream; it’s Blitzwing. This panel was actually the first time Paramount has brought the Transformers to SDCC.

Three More Spider-People for Into the Spider-Verse

Peter, Gwen, and Miles getting their Spidey senses in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse.

Sony’s upcoming animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a highlight of SDCC, with the studio revealing three new Spider-People who will appear in the film: Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Ham, and Peni Parker (and her cybernetic SP//dr suit). Spider-Man noir will be voiced by Nicolas Cage, Spider-Ham by comedian John Mulaney, and Peni by Kimiko Glenn. Responses to clips shown at the Sony panel suggested Spider-Ham will be a highlight.

Venom Footage Confirms Riot

Although Sony failed to drop another Venom trailer at SDCC, the studio did reveal that Riz Ahmed’s Dr. Carlton Drake – head of the sinister Life Foundation – will himself be exposed to a symbiote over the course of the film. He’ll ultimately become the Venom villain known as Riot. Surprisingly, footage shown left attendees speculating the movie will actually be a PG-13, not – as previously believed – R-rated.

Sony Pulls James Gunn Announcement

Finally, while it may not be a Comic-Con reveal, it certainly shaped the SDCC 2018 weekend: Sony had teased that their panel would include a surprise announcement featuring James Gunn, but the studio pulled this announcement in the wake of his firing from Disney.

Buffy Summers looking serious on Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Is Getting A Reboot

The most unexpected news of Comic-Con 2018 was the announcement that Joss Whedon is working on a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot with Monica Owusu-Breen (Midnight, Texas/Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) as showrunner. The project is still in its early stages, and will be pitched to networks over the summer. At its current stage, the new Slayer is intended to be African-American and the series is said to have a stronger focus on diversity.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Saved

Lucasfilm Animation’s Dave Filoni delighted Star Wars fans with the news that Disney and Lucasfilm are reviving the popular animated series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The new series will launch on the Disney streaming service sometime next year, and appears to be inspired by Filoni’s plans for the never-produced season 7; the trailer teased the Siege of Mandalore and the immediate run-up to Revenge of the Sith.

Stargirl TV Series Coming to the DC Universe Streaming Service

DC’s Geoff Johns announced that he’s writing and producing a live-action Stargirl series, to debut on the DC Universe streaming service in 2019. The series comes out of Johns’ recently launched production studio and will focus on Courtney Whitmore aka Stargirl’s “mission to bring back the legacy of the Justice Society.”

Andrew Lincoln’s Definitely Leaving The Walking Dead

As has long been rumored, The Walking Dead season 9 will see a major shakeup of the cast, with Andrew Lincoln confirming he’s leaving the series. Meanwhile, AMC confirmed that Samantha Morton will join the series as Alpha, leader of the Whisperers. The Whisperers are a dangerous band of survivors who wear human skin in order to evade detection by the roaming walker herds. AMC also announced that Aaron Stanford will join Fear the Walking Dead for the rest of this season.

Batwoman TV Series Coming to The CW

A week ago, The CW announced that a Batwoman TV series was in the works, with the popular superhero to join the Arrowverse. That may not have been at Comic-Con, but Kathy Kane definitely ledt an impact, with The CW’s Arrowverse promotional trailers stressing Batwoman’s importance to the growing DCTV slate.

Supergirl Casts the First Transgender Superhero

Also involving The CW, it was revealed that Supergirl season 4 will introduce the first transgender superhero, with Nicole Maines cast as Nia Nal, a.k.a. Dreamer. Other casting announcements included British actor David Ajala as Manchester Black, a telepathic and telekinetic superhero.

American Horror Story Season 8 Confirms Apocalypse Title

As is typical as SDDC, posters for American Horror Story confirmed the new title: season 8 will be called Apocalypse. Though plot details have yet to be revealed, the new season is said to be a crossover between the first and third seasons – Murder House and Coven.

Star Trek: Discovery Confirmed for January – and Star Trek: Short Treks Series Announced

CBS has several Star Trek: Discovery reveals for Comic-Con: Season 2 will return in January 2019 but, n order to keep viewers happy until January, the network also announced Star Trek: Short Treks, a series of four short-form spinoffs, with one episode to drop every month. The first trailer hinted at a major role for Spock in season 2.

Iron Fist Season 2 Will Be The Next Marvel Netflix Show to Stream

Marvel and Netflix dropped the first trailer for Iron Fist season 2 at Comic-Con, revealing that the show will be available to stream on September 7 this year. The panel featured a massive amount of footage, showing the dramatically improved fight choreography. In addition, Marvel revealed that Alice Eve will be playing a classic Daredevil villain, Typhoid Mary.

Chris Klein Confirmed as Cicada in Flash Season 5

Cicada leads a death cult that worships the Flash

The Comic-Con trailer for The Flash season 5 confirmed that Chris Klein has been cast as the season villain, Cicada, a semi-immortal who can disable other metahumans’ powers. Cicada’s motives and backstory are left ambiguous in the trailer, so it’s not clear how this character connects to the time-traveling Nora Allen.

Cloak & Dagger Renewed for Season 2

As expected, Marvel and Freeform have renewed Cloak & Dagger for a second season, confirmed suring the show’s SDCC 2018 panel. Season 2 is set to premiere in spring 2019.

Lobo Will Join Krypton Season 2

The Krypton SDCC 2018 panel revealed that the major season 2 villain will be Lobo, the last Czarnian. Showrunner Cameron Welsh admitted that it seems an unlikely match, given the series is fairly grounded, but he promised that the adaptation will be fairly comic-book-accurate.

The Longbow Hunters Cast for Arrow Season 7

The Arrow Comic-Con panel confirmed that the villains will be the Longbow Hunters, a group who target Oliver Queen for revenge. The Longbow Hunters will consist of Diaz, Kodiak, Red Dart, and The Silencer. Red Dart will be played by Holy Elissa. Miranda Edwards will play the Silencer, who in the comics was an assassin for Talia al Ghul. Kodiak will be portrayed by Michael Jonsson.

Tom Wilson Joining Legends of Tomorrow

Rounding off the Arrowverse’s Comic-Con presence, Back to the Future‘s Tom Wilson was confirmed to join the cast of Legends of Tomorrow season 4. He’ll reportedly play Nate Heywood’s father, Hank Heywood. In addition, it was confirmed that Firestorm and Leonard Snart will not return in this season.
