A clash between the iconic X-Men duo Colossus and Kate Pryde could signal a massive change in the Krakoan status quo. When it comes to star-crossed romances among the X-Men, few are more tumultuous than that of Piotr Rasputin and Shadowcat. The personal lives of these fan-favorite mutants have been intertwined almost since the moment they first met, but through their ups and downs, they’ve usually managed to walk away from one another with at least a modicum of respect. But that could all be changing in an upcoming issue of Immortal X-Men.Shared on Twitter by Immortal X-Men cover artist Mark Brooks (@MarkBrooksArt) the newly revealed cover for issue #12 of the fan-favorite series depicts Colossus shattering the ground at the feet of the Marauder’s captain as Kate Pryde phases away from the debris.
While issue covers are very rarely accurate, it does finally seem as if a long-awaited X-Men plotline is finally coming to fruition. And unfortunately for Kate, her old lover is right at the heart of it.
Colossus Breaks Bad
For quite a while now – almost since Krakoa’s inception – Colossus has been acting as a sleeper agent for his older brother Mikhail Rasputin. With none of his fellow X-Men the wiser, the organic steel powerhouse has been secretly working against Krakoan interests all while feeding information back to his sinister sibling thanks to the work of a mind-controlling minion referred to as the Author. Meanwhile, the X-Men have played right into their enemies’ hands, even allowing their big-hearted comrade a place among the Krakoan Quiet Council under the assumption that Piotr is the same old Colossus – with this newly revealed cover hinting that the Rasputins’ charade is coming to an end.
Covers frequently mislead the reader, but with everything that’s been building for Colossus, it would be a real surprise for this Colossus/Mikhail plotline not to begin to play out. After all, it’s been building for years at this point, and with the “Fall of X” storyline on the horizon, now could be the perfect time for Mikhail Rasputin to pit his baby brother against his beloved X-Men. But having him take down Kate Pryde first will certainly strike a very personal blow.
Kate Has Dealt With Colossus’ Issues For Far Too Long
To say that Colossus and Kate’s relationship has always been a bit strained would be a massive understatement. The sparks first flew between the two heroes when Kate, then called Kitty, was barely a teenager with Piotr already a legal adult. In the years since, their on-again/off-again romance hasn’t exactly panned out for either of these X-Men, with Kate leaving Colossus at the altar of what would become Rogue and Gambit’s wedding. With this conflicted history in mind, it’s not surprising that Kitty will seemingly be the one to confront Piotr over his transgressions.
Colossus and Kate Pryde’s romance is far from picture perfect, and it doesn’t seem like their friendship will be on the upswing anytime soon. Whether Mikhail and Piotr will finally move openly against Krakoa in “Fall of X” remains to be seen. But either way, it’s clear that sparks will soon fly again for the X-Men‘s Colossus and Kate Pryde – and not in a good way.
