Coco Will Receive A Maori Dub On Disney+ Later This Month [EXCLUSIVE]

The movie Coco will receive a brand-new voiceover option soon, with Disney+ adding a Maori dub later this month. The beloved Pixar film was originally released in 2017, receiving critical acclaim for its score and compelling story of the Land of the Dead. Though other Pixar films on the streaming service have previously included the Maori option, there are some for which it still isn’t an available language for viewers, making many classic films inaccessible for many potential fans.

Screen Rant can exclusively reveal that Disney+ will add the Maori language dub for Coco on October 30. The option will be available for fans in the US, New Zealand, Australia, and Canada. The project was done in collaboration with Matewa Media, a New Zealand-based production company that focuses on creating Maori voiceovers for Disney films. Previously, the company has released Maori dubs for movies like The Lion King, Frozen, and Moana.

Coco’s New Language Opens It Up To New Fans

Coco is considered by many to be one of the best animated musicals in recent years, but many viewers have been unable to fully enjoy the experience because of language barriers. This Maori version features an entirely new cast of actors dedicated to providing an authentic experience. Though the film was already massively popular with large swathes of animation fans, this will give a whole new audience the opportunity to enjoy the critically-acclaimed film.

Part of the appeal of Pixar films is the way they capture some of the universal themes of the human experience, making them popular across age groups and countries across the world. Subtitles are an adequate option when it comes to translating a movie, but for a musical like this one it really can’t fully deliver in the way a dub can. Now a whole new group of people will be able to journey to the Land of the Dead with Miguel when the Maori option for Coco launches on Disney+ later this month.
