Toy Story 3 is less than a month away, which means the wait for Pixar’s next pre-show short film is nearly over – and today we’re getting a sneak peak.

Following Tuesday’s Toy Story 3 featurette, /Film has an exclusive preview of the new short Day & Night, which follows in the critically acclaimed footsteps of Partly Cloudy, Presto, and Lifted, among many others.

Day & Night was directed by Teddy Newton and features music from academy award winning composer Michael Giacchino.

In case you missed our prior coverage of Day & Night, here’s the general plot synopsis:

“When Day, a sunny fellow, encounters Night, a stranger of distinctly darker moods, sparks fly! Day and Night are frightened and suspicious of each other at first, and quickly get off on the wrong foot. But as they discover each other’s unique qualities–and come to realize that each of them offers a different window onto the same world–the friendship helps both to gain a new perspective.”

The preview gives a exciting glimpse at the collaboration in the new short – as characters Day and Night are both animated in traditional 2D, while their representative insides are 3D computer graphics. It’s a terrific nod, not only to Disney animation history, but the balance John Lasseter is attempting to find in the studio’s future animated releases.

It’s great to see moviegoers are getting excited about the Pixar shorts – not just the major feature that will follow. However, major credit has to be given to Pixar for the quality of the shorts, which continue to bring fresh ideas and endearing characters – even if they aren’t voiced by actors such as Tom Hanks.

What do you think of the Day & Night clip? What’s your favorite Pixar short?

Day & Night will be released 3 minutes before Toy Story 3 on June 18th.
