Cinderella’s New Horror Movie Finally Does Justice To The Princess In 2 Big Ways

Cinderella’s New Horror Movie Finally Does Justice To The Princess In 2 Big Ways

Cinderella is among the classic fairy tale characters getting a horror movie, titled Cinderella’s Revenge, and this new version finally does justice to her in two big ways. The horror genre has been defined by trends in recent years and one of the most recent and controversial ones is all about characters from media aimed at children getting a horror version. Among these horror reimaginings of children’s stories is Cinderella’s Revenge, directed by Andy Edwards, which will reunite the audience with Cinderella in a slightly different context than the one everyone knows thanks to Disney.

As seen in the first trailer for Cinderella’s Revenge, the movie follows the same premise of the original tale, made popular by Disney’s animated version in 1950. The Prince hosts a royal ball to find a wife, but Cinderella (Lauren Staerck) can’t go as her stepmother won’t allow it. Cinderella is later met by her fairy godmother (Natasha Henstridge), but this version takes a sinister turn as she pushes Cinderella to give her stepmother and stepsisters what they deserve – and this, along with another detail, is doing justice to the princess and her tale.

Cinderella’s Revenge Kept Some Of The Tale’s Goriest Moments

The Cinderella tale, in its different versions, is far from the sweet and heartwarming (though at times tragic) story presented by Disney. There are different literary versions of the tale of Cinderella, the most famous ones being those by Charles Perrault, in 1697, which served as the basis for Disney’s movie, and the one by the Brothers Grimm, which like many of their tales, takes a dark and gory turn. In it, when the Prince proclaims he will marry the maiden whose foot fits the slipper, Cinderella’s stepsisters go to extremes to make sure the shoe fits them.

The stepmother advises her eldest daughter to cut off her toesto fit the slipper as, once she becomes queen, she won’t need to go on foot anymore. However, the prince realizes what she did and is appalled by it, so he tries the slipper on the other stepsister, who had cut off part of her heel to fit into the shoe. In the trailer for Cinderella’s Revenge, it’s briefly shown when the stepsisters test the shoe to see if it fits, and as they don’t, it’s quickly seen how one of them starts cutting her toes.

Giving a horror twist to Cinderella allows the filmmakers to keep these gore elements from the Grimm Brothers’ version of the tale, which obviously aren’t just fitting with the movie’s tone but also make it more loyal to one of the source novels.

Cinderella’s Revenge Gives More Power To Cinderella

Cinderella's Revenge Cinderella and the Fairy Godmother

When it comes to Cinderella herself, Cinderella’s Revenge is definitely doing justice to her. Cinderella has been abused by her stepmother and stepsisters throughout most of her life, but her resilience and kind heart are a big part of the moral lesson of the tale and Disney’s version – but Cinderella’s Revenge is giving her exactly what the title says. Surprisingly, it’s the Fairy Godmother who encourages Cinderella to get her revenge, and even gives her a mask that will allow her to kill those who wish her harm.

By giving her a chance to get revenge on her stepsisters, stepmother, and others who have wronged her, Cinderella’s Revenge is giving the princess the agency that she traditionally never has. It’s to be seen how all this works out for Cinderella in the end and if the Fairy Godmother has other hidden intentions or not.
