Christopher Nolan’s Most Popular Movie On Letterboxd Isn’t What You’d Expect (But It’s Great)

Christopher Nolan’s most popular movie on Letterboxd is one of his best movies but is probably not the first of his filmography to come to mind. After his most recent blockbuster Oppenheimer nearly grossed $1 billion worldwide following its July 2023 release, Nolan’s massive film has generated a great deal of buzz for the rapidly approaching awards season of 2024. The celebrated writer/director has previously been nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay but has not taken home an Oscar.

Nolan has only made one film that has surpassed the coveted $1 billion threshold at the worldwide box office, which is 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises. It may come as somewhat of a surprise that Nolan’s arguably most well-known movie, The Dark Knight, did not gross more than $1 billion upon its 2008 theatrical release, but it did come incredibly close, raking in a whopping $998 million. Although Nolan is famous for his Batman movies, among many others, his most popular film on Letterboxd is a little less predictable.

Interstellar Is Christopher Nolan’s Most Popular Movie On Letterboxd (Why?)

Christopher Nolan’s 2014 space epic Interstellar is his most popular movie on Letterboxd, beating out his other highly successful films such as The Dark Knight, Oppenheimer, Inception, and Dunkirk. There are various metrics that go into what makes any given title popular on Letterboxd, so this ranking does not indicate that Interstellar is Nolan’s most highly-rated movie. It’s still quite interesting that Interstellar, a film that is not considered his best commercially, is so popular on Letterboxd.

Some of the metrics that go into popularity on Letterboxd include the total number of members who add the movie to their watchlist, the total number of reviews written by members on the movie, the number of logs that the movie is given, and how many comments are posted on any given film. In this light, saying that Interstellar is the most popular Christopher Nolan movie on Letterboxd is also another way of saying it’s the most discussed, reviewed, and sought-after movie in his filmography.

Matthew McConnaughey and the tesseract in Interstellar

Interstellar is certainly one of Nolan’s most ambitious movies, sharing similar degrees of narrative size with Oppenheimer and theoretical scope with Inception. Interstellar is also technically very impressive, providing some of the most photorealistic visual interpretations of outer space ever put to film. While everyone has their favorite Nolan film, calling Interstellar the objective number one of the acclaimed director’s filmography is somewhat tough considering how outstanding Oppenheimer, The Dark Knight, and Inception are as well.
