Christopher Nolan Officially Directing ‘Batman 3’

We knew this day was coming, but finally Christopher Nolan has confirmed his role as director of Batman 3. As the script goes through the final phases and rumors continue to heat up, this is the first bit of surefire news we’ve heard in months.

The tight-lipped Nolan hasn’t shared much  about the sequel to The Dark Knight. He did recently acknowledge the state of the screenplay – Jonah Nolan’s first draft is complete and Chris Nolan is now making his edits.

As we wait for Warner Bros. to make an official statement regarding Batman 3, this is the closest to real news regarding the film we’ve gotten in awhile. If the script is truly in the final stages of its development, we can expect to see major headlines popping up in the coming months.

Christopher Nolan responded to questions fromEmpire Online about his involvement in the upcoming Batman 3.

“It’s becoming inevitable, I’ll put it that way. I feel myself falling into it, I guess. And getting it all figured out and I’m pretty excited about what we’re doing so… If I haven’t announced it, I think that people probably all know at this point that I’m doing it.”

If you want a more concise and direct answer from Nolan, Empire did ask specifically if it’s safe to assume he will direct Batman 3. He answered with a swift, “I think you can at this point, yes.”

At a recent Inception press conference in Rome, Nolan was asked about the status of Batman 3. Typically, he skirts around the answer, but Nolan has apparently been drinking too much truth serum as of late, because he shared the status of Jonah Nolan’s script.

“I don’t like to talk too much about things until I’m further along with them.  But I’m working on the script right now.  My brother Jonah has done a draft for the script and now I’m writing on it.  We have set a release date and as far as the film being officially greenlit, they haven’t told us they don’t want to do it. So I’m hopeful.”

While today’s news is not jaw-dropping, or even surprising, it brings a much-needed sigh of relief to anxious fans. Still, plenty of questions remain, though:

  • Which villains will battle Batman?
  • Which actors will portray the new villains?
  • What will Batman 3 be about?
  • Will it be in 3D, IMAX, or even 3D IMAX?
  • Will Wayne Manor and the Batcave be rebuilt as promised at the end of Batman Begins?
  • What will the movie be called? (my vote goes to Shadow of the Bat).

Are there any other ideas or questions you want answered in the upcoming months? Do you think Nolan can make a quality Batman sequel while simultaneously overseeing development of the next Superman movie?

We’ll have to wait and see.
