Chris Rock announces he has tested positive for COVID-19 and advocates for people to get vaccinated. The past year and a half has been an odd and difficult time for many, and it seems like the end isn’t as close as many expected it to be earlier this summer. 2021 has brought about coronavirus vaccines and the apparent return to normal life, but the ongoing Delta surge has cast doubt on the idea that the crisis will be over soon. When it comes to the entertainment industry, while long-delayed movies like No Time to Die and Venom: Let There Be Carnage are finally on the verge of releasing, there is still much uncertainty.
At this point in 2021, Rock is coming off a pair of high-profile projects. Last year, he starred in the fourth season of FX’s Fargo, playing crime boss Loy Cannon. He then helped bring back the Saw franchise this past spring with the ninth installment Spiral. Rock’s next major movie is poised to be David O. Russell’s next film, which also boasts a star-studded cast including Margot Robbie, Rami Malek, and Robert De Niro (among many, many others).
Sunday morning, Rock took to social media to reveal he has tested positive for COVID. “Hey guys I just found out I have COVID, trust me you don’t want this,” he wrote. Rock then added, very pointedly, “Get vaccinated.” Earlier this year, he said publicly that he had been vaccinated, which means his current diagnosis is a breakout infection.

The David O. Russell project recently received a late 2022 premiere date, which seemed to indicate that filming would kick off by the end of the year. Rock’s schedule could now be dependent on his recovery, though he could very well be able to return to a film set within the next few weeks. As he has been vaccinated, he hopefully won’t require any kind of hospitalization. Rock at least seems down for the count for the time being, but with rest and care, he should be okay.
Despite the science being sound and numerous health professionals supporting getting vaccinated, the idea has unfortunately been a controversial one. Vaccination rates aren’t what they should be at this point in the pandemic, which has further contributed to the Delta surge. In the entertainment industry, companies like Netflix and Disney have issued vaccine mandates for their employees, while in-person events like New York Comic-Con and Broadway shows require proof of vaccination from guests. As Rock said in his tweet, no one wants to get COVID, and the best way to avoid that is to get protected. In other words, get vaccinated.
