Chris Pratt’s Upcoming Sci-Fi Movies Need To Fix A Terrible 8-Year Rotten Tomatoes Record

Two upcoming sci-fi movies starring Chris Pratt must fix his disappointing streak in the genre that’s been going on for nearly a decade. While Pratt’s flagship franchise Guardians of the Galaxy certainly has sci-fi elements, it essentially resides in its own genre as a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Outside the MCU, Pratt has not found much success among critics in recent years. His once-promising Jurassic World franchise has diminished in quality with each installment, and his fan-favorite series The Terminal List received a 40% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Pratt became one of the biggest celebrities in the world after he signed on for the lead role in Jurassic World, The Lego Movie, and Guardians of the Galaxy, which all came out within a span of 1.5 years. Before that, he had supporting roles in the now-classic films Her (2013) and Zero Dark Thirty (2012), and was a celebrated member of the Parks and Recreation cast. With more momentum calling for Pratt to be recast as Star-Lord, it’s interesting to speculate just how successful Pratt’s other films can be without the adjacent influence of his status in the MCU.

Chris Pratt Has A Pretty Bad Rotten Tomatoes Record In Sci-Fi Movies (Outside The MCU)

Most of Chris Pratt’s latest efforts in both film and television have rated poorly on Rotten Tomatoes, with titles such as Passengers, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, The Tomorrow War, and Jurassic World: Dominion all receiving “rotten” reviews. Most of Pratt’s feature films as of late belong in the science fiction genre, a category in which he hasn’t found much critical success outside of the MCU. It should be noted that while many of Pratt’s latest films aren’t celebrated from a critical lens, several of them have earned more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

Pratt is building on his filmography in the form of original Amazon series and movies that began with 2021’s The Tomorrow War. While there were no box office metrics to dissect to determine the success of the streaming movie, The Tomorrow War proved to draw enough viewers for Amazon to team up with Pratt again on the recently announced Mercy. Based on its futuristic premise, Mercy looks to continue the Pratt sci-fi trend that, despite poor critical reception, appears to show no sign of losing momentum.

Pratt will also star in the sci-fi adventure film The Electric State from Anthony and Joe Russo alongside Millie Bobby Brown. Based on the hype surrounding this project, The Electric State could finally break Pratt’s terrible streak on Rotten Tomatoes for non-MCU sci-fi films. The Electric State is slated for a 2024 release on Netflix and is sure to be one of the most anticipated streaming films of the year. Mercy also has the potential to break the Chris Pratt streak, but it’s too early to call.
