Chris Pratt Says Playing Indiana Jones Would Be ‘Awesome Opportunity’

Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012 got many people talking about the future Star Wars films that the transaction would bring about, but movie fans are well aware that the Mouse House’s property is also the place where famed archeologist Indiana Jones resides. As such, there has been talk about a fifth installment in that classic action franchise periodically throughout the past few years, though Disney CEO Bob Iger has stated they are “pacing themselves” in regard to Indy 5.

However, it would appear that the studio is in the early stages of developing a new Indiana Jones movie, with recent rumors suggesting that Chris Pratt is being eyed to take over for Harrison Ford in a reboot. Nothing is official, but it’s a distinct possibility that audiences will be returning to this world in the near future, and Pratt would be more than happy to be the one to play Dr. Jones.

While speaking at a press event pertaining to his Hasty Pudding Man of the Year award (hat tip Comic Book), Pratt commented briefly on the idea of him suiting up as Henry Jones, Jr., calling it an “awesome opportunity” should it come to fruition. He wouldn’t say if there were any truth to the rumors (i.e., if he had discussions with Disney), but viewers can take this as a sign that the actor would be willing to sign on should the studio ask him.

Pratt became one of the biggest box office stars in the world last year after scoring headlining roles in both The LEGO Movie and Guardians of the Galaxy, but one can see why he would feel this way about portraying Indiana Jones. The character is one of the most iconic and beloved figures in movie history, and anyone who follows Ford’s footsteps would most likely see it as a tremendous honor to carry the torch for a new generation of moviegoers. In a way, it would be like signing on to be the next James Bond, which is fitting because that series was hugely influential for the Indiana Jones movies.

Similarly, Disney would be making a wise business decision if they enticed Pratt to take on the role. They understand better than most his place in the movie star hierarchy, and his standing should only continue to grow as he becomes more and more synonymous with geek-friendly entertainment (Jurassic WorldCowboy Ninja Viking). Right now, there’s not as much momentum surrounding Indiana Jones 5 when compared to something like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so Pratt’s presence could encourage people it’s worth seeing.

At the same time, one does have to wonder if Pratt would be the best option from a creative standpoint if Indy 5 does indeed happen. At this stage, he almost seems like the no-brainer safe choice (especially after Star-Lord), and Disney might be better served giving the part to an up-and-coming rising star (like Pratt before Guardians). This would allow the new movie to feel more like a vehicle for the character and not its omnipresent theoretical leading man. It’s true Ford was an established star when he made Raiders of the Lost Ark, but in 1981, Indiana Jones was a new IP and needed a boost in awareness. That’s not the case anymore.

Indiana Jones may be recast

Either way, we shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that this is all hypothetical for the time being. Development on a new Indiana Jones film is in the earliest of stages, and Pratt just keeps on adding more projects to his already loaded schedule. The idea of him donning the fedora may be an intriguing one for all parties involved, but if it’s deemed logistically impossible, that awesome opportunity will fall to another actor who would enthusiastically jump at the challenge of filling Ford’s large shoes.
