Chris Pine’s New Disney Villain Song Is Even Better After His 10-Year-Old Hit Musical That Made $213 Million

Chris Pine’s New Disney Villain Song Is Even Better After His 10-Year-Old Hit Musical That Made 3 Million

Chris Pine’s solo song in Disney’s Wish is a highlight of the movie, and it only gets better when taking his equally brilliant musical number from a 2014 hit film into consideration. Wish‘s voice cast sees Pine portray the character of King Magnifico, the villain of the film. Magnifico gets his own villain song, titled “This Is The Thanks I Get?!,” which is arguably the best song on the Wish’s soundtrack. However, it’s easy to appreciate “This Is The Thanks I Get?!” even more after listening to another of Pine’s movie musical numbers.

Wish takes place in the Kingdom of Rosas, a magical realm ruled over by King Magnifico. Magnifico’s villain backstory establishes that he is a sorcerer who has the power to grant his subject’s wishes. He craves praise and validation, which is mostly what “This Is The Thanks I Get?!” is about. Additionally, the song also happens to share similar themes with another song from a Chris Pine-starring Disney film, Into The Woods.

Chris Pine’s Wish Villain Song Is A Great Reminder Of His Prince Charming Character’s “Agony” From Into The Woods

The Actor Knows How To Pull Off A Musical Number

Chris Pine’s New Disney Villain Song Is Even Better After His 10-Year-Old Hit Musical That Made 3 Million

Like the Stephen Sondheim musical it’s based on, Into the Woods is essentially a crossover between several different fairytales. In this regard, it shares something in common with the 2023 movie, which is also somewhat of an amalgamation with Wish‘s dozens of references to past Disney movies. In Into the Woods, Chris Pine plays Cinderella’s Prince who, much like in the original fairytale, yearns for the affections of Cinderella (Anna Kendrick). In fact, so desperate for Cinderella’s attention is the Prince that he, along with Rapunzel’s Prince (Billy Magnussen), sing a duet titled “Agony” about who’s more heartbroken.

“Agony” essentially revolves around the Prince questioning why Cinderella would run away from him, something she appeared to do earlier in the movie. The song’s opening lines clearly illustrate this point: “Did I abuse her/Or show her disdain?/ Why does she run from me?” As the two Princes compete over who is in more emotional pain, a rather pathetic picture is painted of both men. Cinderella’s Prince might be handsome, charming, and rich, but his need for validation makes him desperate. Interestingly, Pine’s “Agony” has a lot in common with the actor’s big villain song in Wish.

Chris Pine’s Prince Charming & King Magnifico Song Lyrics Share A Big Similarity

The Two Disney Songs Are Surprisingly Alike

At first glance, Cinderella’s Prince and King Magnifico appear to be quite different. After all, the Prince is an arrogant yet likable goofball, while Magnifico is a villainous tyrant. Nevertheless, both men crave validation and praise, and the songs they sing demonstrate this. While “Agony” is all about the Prince’s desire for Cinderella to want to be with him, “This Is the Thanks I Get?!” portrays Magnifico’s hunger for praise from his subjects. Magnifico, like the Prince, appears to have it all, yet none of it is worth anything if he isn’t adored by the people of his kingdom.

However, it’s not just that both characters crave validation that makes them similar; it’s that neither of them can understand why they aren’t getting the praise they believe they deserve. Both songs focus on arrogance. “Agony” contains the lyrics, “Am I not sensitive, clever/Well-mannered, considerate/Passionate, charming/As kind as I’m handsome/And heir to a throne?” Likewise, Magnifico sings, “I can’t help it if mirrors love my face/It’s genetics, yeah, I got these genes from outer space. Ultimately, both of Pine’s Into the Woods and Wish characters love themselves a lot and can’t imagine why others don’t love them just as much.
