Chris Evans shares his enthusiasm for a viral video that remade the iconic portals scene from Avengers: Endgame into an allegory for today’s Black Lives Matter protests. Endgame marked Evans’ last time in the MCU, having played Steve Rogers/Captain America ever since 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger. Since Endgame was largely marketed as the end of an era, especially for the original six Avengers, fans went into the film expecting a major send-off for Steve. In the end, Steve opted to return to the 1940s to live out a domestic life with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) and passed off his shield to trusted friend Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie). While it’s true that people are rarely truly gone from the MCU, Evans recently said he doesn’t think he’ll be coming back.
Last week, a video depicting the portals scene from Endgame (AKA the moment where all the dusted heroes from Avengers: Infinity War returned in triumphant fashion) in a new way went viral. The recent death of an unarmed black man, George Floyd, at the hands of a white police officer sparked massive protests across the world, and countless groups of people from all walks of life have gathered to promote the Black Lives Matter movement. The Endgame video positioned the heroes as those groups to show the way they all united for a common goal.
Since the video went viral, fans have been eager to get it seen by MCU cast members. Actress Yvette Nicole Brown brought it to Evans’ attention, saying, “folks wanna make sure you, in particular, have seen this!” Evans responded with many hearts and said, “I have now 🙂 it’s fantastic!!! Thank you for sharing it with me.” You can see Evans’ response, as well as the video (no longer shared by the original creator but instead by Jemele Hill), below.
Evans has been open with his support for the protests and the Black Lives Matter movement. He joins fellow Marvel star Michael B. Jordan, who just gave a speech about Hollywood needing to hire more black talent, and others like Halsey, Dwayne Johnson, and John Boyega as those who have used their platforms to speak up for the cause. Evans has always been politically active, especially in recent years as he shares his dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump.
Throughout these protests, many people have channeled their inner superhero. On the DC side, protesters in Philadelphia spotted Batman walking among them to their amusement and delight. The protests are likely going to continue into the next week as people continue the fight to end police brutality and systemic racism, and even more public figures will likely chime in with their support. Will those protests continue to draw connections to Endgame? Possibly, though they will be all the more special because they are real.
