Chinese Zodiac: 5 Fantasy Movies Dogs Will Love (& 5 They Will Hate)

Chinese Zodiac: 5 Fantasy Movies Dogs Will Love (& 5 They Will Hate)

Those born in years of the Dog take a lot from their animal namesake. Dogs tend to be loyal, sincere, and kind individuals. They are straight-forward and supportive. They can be incredibly inspirational, but sometimes closed off, or moody. Still, above all, they value their bonds of community and offer a very special sort of unconditional love to those they are closest to.

Here are some fantasy movies that are absolutely perfect for Dogs and others that won’t work as well for this year of the Chinese Zodiac.

Love: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Chinese Zodiac: 5 Fantasy Movies Dogs Will Love (& 5 They Will Hate)

Dogs are loyal, kind, and generous, so they’ll really appreciate a movie that supports these values as well. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is all about keeping one’s promises, to friends, family, and yourself. Sirius keeps his promise to be Harry’s godfather, Harry keeps his promise to save Buckbeaks, and Ron and Hermione keep their promises to support Harry with everything they’ve got.

Dogs will love this film with loyalty, family, and friendship at its heart.

Hate: 300

Soldiers walking together with weapons in hands in 300

300 is not a great movie for the Dogs among us. While there is definitely loyalty in the film, Dogs will not enjoy seeing how a fierce group of soldiers is crushed into nothing. Their warm spirits will rebel against the cruelty the movie displays with such joy.

Dogs will enjoy a more inspirational film with a happier ending.

Love: The Princess Bride

The Princess Bride is all about loyalty, even above romance. Westley is incredibly loyal to Buttercup and never ever gives up on getting back to her, similarly, Buttercup holds her love for Westley throughout everything she goes through, never straying in her emotions.

For Dogs, loyalty is ultimately the most important thing and they’ll love seeing it played out here.

Hate: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

There are many bonds broken in Order of the Phoenix and Dogs certainly won’t like. In this installment of Harry Potter, Harry is incredibly angry. He’s angry with his friends, his guardians, and his professors–Dogs won’t enjoy this lack of loyalty.

Unfortunately, this lack is reciprocal, and many of the people that Harry is supposed to be able to trust are not transparent with him either. A total relationship failure for a Dog.

Love: Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Aragorn and Arwen in TLotR The Return of the King.

Dogs will love this final Lord of the Rings film–not only for its triumph of storytelling and its visual feast but because of its focus on bonds of loyalty. The Lord of the Rings is all about the ties of fellowship, of course, and this movie is the culmination of it all.

In this final battle, the bonds of the fellowship are tested like never before, but in the end, they all emerge together and whole. Dogs will applaud this ending and will especially adore the touching scenes between Sam and Frodo as Mount Doom collapses, as well as Aragorn’s stirring speech to all of man.

Hate: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory family looking concerned

Dogs will not appreciate this film, which is based largely on deceit and betrayal. Dogs will find neither the children, who lie and cheat nor Wonka, who gives punishment like a mercurial god, very attractive. The overall atmosphere of this movie is incredibly dark and unwelcoming.

It doesn’t speak to the playful, sincere soul of a dog.

Love: Frozen

Elsa and Anna in the ice palace in Frozen.

Frozen is about the bonds of sisterhood and how they can be the truest, loveliest bonds of all. Like their animal namesake, Dogs are true creatures of family, they adore their families, chosen and blood, and would do anything to defend them.

Frozen speaks to how loyalty to those you love, and, of course, to yourself, will truly free you to be at your finest. This is a lesson that Dogs adore.

Hate: Pete’s Dragon

Pete and Elliot eat apples in Pete's Dragon 1977

Pete’s Dragon is too chaotic for a Dog to really appreciate. They won’t enjoy the trouble the movie’s leads get in, or how they fail to defend one another in tough times.

On top of this, Dogs will hate the mistreatment that occurs in this movie, and won’t enjoy watching it at all.

Love: Thor

Thor and Mjölnir Thor (2011)

Thor is a fantasy made for a Dog. Thor is the ultimate Dog himself, affable, supportive, loyal, and always ready with earnest passion. The throughline of Thor is also one of family and loyalty, as Thor struggles to find common ground with his brother, whom he loves, and to understand the weight of his role as the future King.

Thor’s ultimate devotion to his loved ones and to his kingdom will attract a Dog.

Hate: Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl

Jack Sparrow's compass from the Pirates-of-the-Caribbean franchise

There is no loyalty in Pirates of the Carribbean. While the pirates themselves may find this to be an appealing trait, Dogs certainly will not. They enjoy a much more honest approach, where everyone speaks plainly and sincerely.

In Pirates, this is incredibly hard to come by, instead, the characters prefer to lie, betray, and obscure where they can. All in all, this is not a movie, or a franchise, for Dogs who will not be impressed.
