Children Of The Corn 2023 Fixes The Original Movie’s Biggest Villain Flaw

Children Of The Corn 2023 Fixes The Original Movie’s Biggest Villain Flaw

While Children of the Corn 2023 might have been relentlessly delayed over the last 3 years, the Stephen King adaptation’s trailer does promise that the reboot will fix the original movie’s worst flaw. 1984’s Children of the Corn is not one of the best screen adaptations of Stephen King’s work. A slow, egregiously padded adaptation of the short story of the same name, Children of the Corn cuts the story’s downbeat original ending and failed to impress critics as a result. However, Children of the Corn did resonate with audiences, earning eight direct sequels and a TV movie remake.

While 2023’s Children of the Corn could struggle to outdo other recent horror movies with similar themes, the prequel does have one major factor working in its favor. Unlike earlier versions of the story, Children of the Corn 2023 will depict the backstory of the titular killer cult. A group of bloodthirsty children who murder their parents and everyone else in their remote hometown in cold blood, the Children of the Corn are already established by the time the original movie begins. In contrast, Children of the Corn delves into their origins.

Children of the Corn 2022 Finally Shows The Main Villain

In the process, it looks like Children of the Corn 2023 will finally fix the biggest problem with the original movie adaptation. Judging by the trailer’s closing moments, the long-delayed reboot will give viewers a direct glimpse of He Who Walks Among the Rows, which is more than the 1984 original offered. Like fellow Stephen King adaptation The Boogeyman, the Children of the Corn movie trailer promises a creepy supernatural monster for the 2023 iteration. This entity was notably absent from the original movie, despite the children worshiping the unseen He Who Walks Among the Rows and even attempting to sacrifice the heroes to the mysterious creature.

The closing moments of Children of the Corn 2023’s trailer depict something reaching for the heroine from inside a cornrow, although the glimpse doesn’t give viewers much of a chance to make out the monster’s appearance. In the original story, He Who Walks Among the Row is never described but, since the story is so brief, this is easier to excuse. Moreover, the gruesome aftermath of a killing committed by He Who Walks Among the Rows is seen, whereas in the movie adaptation, a line of upturned dirt is all that indicated the being’s presence (a visual motif that was unfortunately reminiscent of Caddyshack’s gopher).

Why Children of the Corn’s Missing Villain Hurt the Movie

While Children of the Corn 1984 has plenty of other problems, one of its biggest issues is the movie’s inability to depict its main monster. Without any idea what He Who Walks Among the Rows looks like (beyond some bizarre blue sparks that kill Isaac at the movie’s ending), Children of the Corn’s only antagonist is its eponymous pack of killer kids. While they are a little creepy, these children are hardly a legitimate threat. As a result, Children of the Corn backslides into almost unintentional comedy at times – something its 2023 reboot should be able to avoid thanks to He Who Walks Among the Rows.
