Chicago Med is part of the One Chicago franchise alongside Chicago P.D. and Chicago Fire, and much like its sister shows is one of the most exciting procedurals currently on NBC. Created by Dick Wolf, Chicago Med brings the action and intensity of the One Chicago block to an emergency medicine setting. Across its first 8 seasons, the third Dick Wolf One Chicago show found its footing and a devoted following thanks to its emphasis on both intense medical cases and complex interpersonal relationships between its various characters.
Chicago Med follows the elite teams of doctors and nurses at the Gaffney Chicago Medical Center as they do everything they can to treat their patients and save people’s lives. It is also part of a larger universe and crosses over with the police from Chicago P.D. and the fire department in Chicago Fire, where all three groups work together to help keep Chicago safe. After premiering in 2015, the series has enjoyed eight seasons and 163 episodes. The Latest Chicago Med Season 9 News
On November 20, 2023, NBC announced the return dates for six shows delayed by the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. The network confirmed when the release dates for its One Chicago block and three titles in Dick Wolf’s Law & Order franchise can be expected. The One Chicago shows, including Chicago Med season 9, will arrive on January 17, 2024. Chicago Med will open the programming block at 20:00, followed by Chicago Fire at 21:00 and Chicago P.D. at 22:00.
It has also been announced that Chicago Med season 9 will be adding a new cast member. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Luke Mitchell will be appearing in a guest star capacity as Dr. Mitch Ripley, an Emergency Room doctor who has a history with Dr. Charles (Oliver Platt). Though Mitchell is only a guest star now, there is a chance his character could be upgraded in the future.
Chicago Med Season 9 is Confirmed
The Chicago Med season 9 renewal was confirmed in April 2022, when NBC extended all three of the One Chicago shows for another season. The announcement pushed Chicago Fire to Season 12, Chicago P.D. to Season 11, and Chicago Med to Season 9. With the shows still bringing in massive viewers every week, don’t expect season 9 to be the end.

The release date for Chicago Med season 9 has been set for January 17, 2024, on NBC. The next season of Chicago Med, along with the rest of NBC’s One Chicago block, was delayed by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023. Per a report from Deadline, Chicago Med season 9 will have around 13 episodes.
Chicago Med Season 9 Cast
There is a major change coming to the Chicago Med season 9 cast. Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) is leaving the show after serving as one of the leads since the first season. In the season 8 finale, Will left the hospital after taking the blame for tampering with O.R. 2.0, and this ended up seeing him really leaving the series for good. However, he also reunited with his ex-fiance Natalie Manning, and the two got their happily ever after ending. Another person likely leaving the show for good is April Sexton, although actor Yaya DaCosta left the door open for a possible return, only if she came back as a full-fledged doctor.

Chicago Med Season 9 Story Details
When it comes to the Chicago Med season 9 story, the new season should remain true to what it does best. Each week’s episode has the team working to help save lives in the hospital, in often creative ways. Each episode has one or more cases of the week as well as the running storylines of the staff’s relationship with each other. If there is one thing that fans might want to keep an eye on, it is the new power dynamic in the hospital with Dr. Will Halstead leaving. Grace Song also faces possible repercussions for sabotaging OR 2.0.
