Marvel fans are gearing up for one of the most exciting dates in their 2017 calendar, as Netflix unveil The Defenders this summer. For the first time, the streaming service and Marvel Entertainment will bring together Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) in their own mini-series, with the four heroes teaming up to face their biggest threat yet.

Whilst not too much has been revealed about the story of The Defenders, more information is now beginning to trickle out to fans, and recently Charlie Cox has opened up some more about his own dealings with bringing his Daredevil character into a whole new series.

Speaking to EW about The Defenders, Cox revealed the startling realization he came to when he tried to research the subject: “I actually went and purchased an issue. And then when I realized [Daredevil wasn’t in it], I went… ‘Huh’.” Fortunately, he was able to get valuable inspiration elsewhere.

“There are some fantastic moments in the Daredevil series with Jessica Jones, with Luke Cage, with Iron Fist. I’ve taken note of the moments in the Daredevil comics where new characters are coming in and sharing panels with Daredevil, and in terms of how Matt might operate in a team-up scenario, I read Civil War. He plays a relatively big part in the comics – I mean, he’s kind of in the background for most of it, but the crux of the plan hinges on him. And so, I’m just looking for little nuggets, for stuff I can use and any clues into how I can play him.”

This led to a most noteworthy discovery. “One of my favorite images,” Cox revealed, “is from a Daredevil issue with Luke Cage and Daredevil on a rooftop eating cheeseburgers. I love that.”

The Marvel universe brought to fans via Netflix can be a gloomy one at the best of times, so to see a little fun injected into the series via this Easter Egg would certainly be something welcomed by the biggest fans watching from home.

There’s no telling as to just how the different personalities that make up The Defenders will come together. There’s every chance Daredevil and Cage won’t get along at all. It’d then be difficult to imagine the two atop a building sharing a burger and fries. We’ll all just have to wait and see what the writers have up their sleeves.

Daredevil season 1 and 2, Jessica Jones season 1, and Luke Cage season 1 are now available on Netflix. Iron Fist will premiere on March 17. The Defenders and The Punisher will arrive at some point this year. Premiere dates for the newest seasons of Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and Luke Cage have not yet been announced.
