Charlie Cox Teases What Could’ve Happened In Daredevil Season 4

Daredevil’s Charlie Cox has spoken about what might have happened if the hit Netflix series was renewed for a fourth season. Created by Drew Goddard, Daredevil was the first in a series of MCU adjacent television series to be created for streaming on Netflix and was later followed by Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist before leading into the crossover series, The Defenders. The show’s second season also served to introduce Jon Bernthal’s character of Frank Castle, who also received his own spinoff series, The Punisher.

Despite being widely regarded as one of the most popular and critically acclaimed of the Netflix-based Marvel series, Netflix officially announced the series would not be renewed for a fourth season in November 2018. While this news was a hard blow for fans, it was hardly unexpected given the earlier cancellations of Luke Cage and Iron Fist, along with Disney’s plans to begin pulling their content from the streaming platform ahead of their own platform’s launch. A few short months later, both Jessica Jones and The Punisher would suffer the same fate. Three years later, fans are still loudly crying out for a series revival, or at least the return of Cox’s character within the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Most recently, Cox appeared with his Daredevil co-star Deborah Ann Woll at MCM Comic-Con London (via Comicbook.com) and shared a few details about what fans might expect were the show renewed for a fourth season. Admitting that a “lot of time has passed,” Cox says any attempts to resurrect the show would “have to be a kind of reimagining,” but also concedes “there’s a lot of loose ends to tie up.” Check out his full comments below:

A lot of time has passed. So, god knows if anything can happen for us in the future, I really don’t know. Obviously, if something were to happen, that would be thrilling. But because so much time has passed, I’d imagine it would have to be a kind of reimagining. Assuming that they choose to use us, it would be an interesting scenario, because it would be a reimagining with the same foundation. I know there are so many great storylines to tell. We never really got into the Bullseye stuff. There is an unfinished history with Karen and Matt that we got to almost get to in Season 2.

There’s a lot of loose ends we’d like to tie up. Having said that, I’m really proud of what we did, and we ended on a high.

While Netflix’s original statement surrounding the series cancellation suggested “the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel,” at the moment, there have still been no official announcements regarding the potential return of Matt Murdock to screens. Rumors, however, have been rampant that Kevin Feige and the powers-that-be at Marvel Studios have long been looking for a way to introduce the character into the MCU proper, and gossip has linked him with everything from potential cameos in Spider-Man: No Way Home to She-Hulk and the upcoming Echo spinoff series. One thing is for certain, however, if Daredevil does make a future MCU appearance, fans aren’t the only ones insisting on it being played by Cox, with the star himself jokingly saying he would fight any new actor cast in the role.

It probably seems inevitable that Daredevil will eventually make an MCU comeback, the big question will be in what form and whether it will be as the same version audiences were introduced to on Netflix. As Cox suggested, season three left fans with a lot of “loose ends”, and Wilson Bethel’s Bullseye was only just coming into his own as a villain with a lot of potential for future storylines. Until Marvel Studios make an official announcement, however, Daredevil fans will have to continue to keep their fingers crossed that a triumphant return is somewhere on the cards.
