Charlie Cox Credits Save Daredevil Movement For Matt Murdock’s MCU Return

Charlie Cox thanks Marvel fans for the “Save Daredevil” campaign, which he credits with bringing the character back into the limelight ahead of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s upcoming Disney+ series, Daredevil: Born Again. Before the era of live-action Disney+ Marvel series, Netflix ran a few Marvel shows, which included Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and the hugely popular Daredevil. Cox debuted as the titular hero in 2015 and starred in the show for 3 seasons until its cancelation in 2018. His character Matt Murdock was an attorney by day and the hero Daredevil by night, staying local to his home of Hell’s Kitchen.

Since the Netflix Marvel shows exist in a nebulous state in terms of the MCU’s canon, fans of the franchise long hoped to see Cox suit up once again after Daredevil‘s cancelation and officially join the MCU. In Spider-Man: No Way Home, Cox’s brief cameo as Matt shocked viewers and confirmed the character’s existence in the larger MCU, offering the potential for more appearances from him going forward. Sure enough, Cox popped up again in Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, and some have speculated that he will appear in next summer’s Echo. Additionally, there was the news that Daredevil would get his own show once again, with 2024’s Daredevil: Born Again putting Cox into the cowl once more.

While speaking with Marvel.com, Cox credited the “Save Daredevil” campaign for lobbying to bring Daredevil into the MCU. He mentioned having “lost hope years ago” to play the character again, thanking the audience for never giving up. The actor also expressed a deep love for the character of Daredevil, calling the opportunity to play him “the great honor of my career.” See Cox’s thoughts on reprising the role in the MCU and his message to fans of the series below:

“There’s so much I want to say. Whatever happens to my career going forward from this point on, I owe most of it to the “Save Daredevil” campaign. That even when I had lost hope years ago, they did not, and they continued to campaign and support. And over the years, I’ve met many of them, and they’re such an enthusiastic, passionate crowd.

Daredevil is such an amazing character. It’s been the great honor of my career to be offered that part and to be able to play him. I’ve had such fun with it. It’s changed my life irrevocably. And when the show came to an end, despite the disappointment of the journey ending, I felt like we’d done a good job, and we had an amazing time and we could only be grateful for what we’d had.

To be invited back and starting again, almost, it feels like a little bit like a dream. It feels too good to be true. I’m so excited about the future. I can’t wait to get on the set from the first day of the new show. I’m already starting to train. As you know, I’m already starting to make plans in terms of living and training and having conversations with the writers and all of those things. So it’s starting to feel very real.”

Will Daredevil: Born Again Be Another Origin Story?

Charlie Cox Credits Save Daredevil Movement For Matt Murdock’s MCU Return

Daredevil: Born Again has previously been described as a ‘reboot’ of the previous series centered on the character, implying a new direction for the show. Though it’s clear that the Disney+ show won’t serve as a ‘season 4’ to the Netflix iteration, very few plot details are known, besides the appearance of the Netflix show’s villain Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio). Other characters from Daredevil, such as Foggy (Elden Henson) and Karen (Deborah Ann Woll) haven’t yet been mentioned in casting announcements, though the show’s 2024 release date offers plenty of time for more information to be released. Netflix’s Daredevil covered Matt’s origin story in the first season, but it’s unknown if the MCU will tread that ground once again in order to acclimate new viewers. However, it’s unlikely that Marvel will go that route, since Matt has already appeared a few times in official canon, and origin stories have not been a staple for every MCU hero’s solo story (for example, Holland’s Spider-Man).

If Cox does reprise his role as Daredevil in Echo, which will star Alaqua Cox, the plot for his solo show may become more clear, though his short stint in She-Hulk: Attorney At Law didn’t tease much in terms of future narratives for the character. However, series’ west coast setting gave viewers the chance to see Matt/Daredevil in a new area, while Echo will likely take place closer to home for Matt and therefore potentially offer more insight to his day-to-day activities. Daredevil: Born Again will serve as a delightful foray for viewers who never thought they’d get another Daredevil show starring Cox, and it’s clear that the actor credits Daredevil fans for its existence.
