Chapelwaite Trailer: Adrien Brody Stars In Stephen King Adaptation

Epix has revealed the first trailer for Chapelwaite, the Adrien Brody-starring adaptation of Stephen King’s short story “Jerusalem’s Lot.” The series hails from Jason and Peter Filardi. The former is known for the movie 17 Again, and the latter penned the scripts for the original Flatliners and The Craft. In addition to starring, Brody executive produces the series alongside Ready Player One‘s Donald De Line, the Filardis, and Burr Steers.

Chapelwaite is set in the 1850s and centers on Brody’s Captain Charles Boone as he relocates his family of three children to his ancestral home in the small, sleepy town of Preacher’s Corners, Maine after his wife dies at sea. Shortly after arriving, Boone connects with an ambitious young woman named Rebecca Morgan (Schitt’s Creek‘s Emily Hampshire) who has also returned to the town to write a story for the new and prestigious Atlantic Magazine. However, they both find their plans upended as they learn of the darkness that has plagued their families and the town for generations.

After wrapping production late last year, Epix has revealed the first trailer for Chapelwaite. In addition to confirming the series’ August premiere date on the network, the video offers a look at the terrors plaguing Boone and Morgan in the small Maine town. Check out the trailer below:

Adaptations of King’s work have generally proven to be a mixed bag since Brian De Palma’s Carrie, but the past year has seen storytellers find a way to effectively bring various corners of his bibliography to life on screen. From HBO’s The Outsider to Audience’s Mr. Mercedes, TV has proven to be a solid new avenue for King’s work, and the first trailer for Chapelwaite is certainly looking to keep the winning streak alive. It looks to be a fairly faithful adaptation, and both Brody and Hampshire seem more than up for the task of bringing the story to life.

However, given the source material only contains roughly 50 pages of storytelling, and the series is set to run 10 episodes, it does pose an intriguing hurdle for the Filardis to find a way to expand the story. At the very least, the first trailer does offer some hope for those who love “Jerusalem’s Lot” for its moody atmosphere, subtle ghastly apparitions, and attention to period detail. Only time will tell how it turns out when Chapelwaite premieres on Epix on August 22.
