With Illumination Entertainment seemingly planning on turning The Super Mario Bros. Movie into a franchise, there are plenty of characters to pull from for The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, including Wario, Waluigi, Yoshi, Princess Daisy, and more.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie brings Nintendo’s Mario franchise to the big screen for the first time in decades, with the computer-animated movie setting up an entire franchise. The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s box office is already tracking to be another smash hit for Illumination, meaning the prospect of a sequel is inevitable. The first film follows the titular Mario brothers as they leave Brooklyn and are sucked into a mystical land known as the Mushroom Kingdom. The sequel will most likely expand on the Mario universe, moving on from the video games’ simple story, and here are the best casting picks for some potential new characters.

10 Wario – Danny McBride

Casting Wario, Waluigi & 8 More Missing Game Characters For Super Mario Bros. 2

Wario is easily the Mario‘s franchises most popular human character that hasn’t appeared in the movies yet, and introducing him in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 would be a great idea. Danny McBride would make the perfect Wario, fitting in with the cast while bringing his own spin to the character. McBride has plenty of voice acting history, most notably playing Rick Mitchell in The Mitchells vs. The Machines. McBride would follow the Mario movie’s casting patterns, with him fitting right in alongside other comedians such as Charlie Day and Seth Rogen. McBride would perfectly fit the schlubby villain role that Wario is known for in the games.

9 Waluigi – Walton Goggins

If Danny McBride is playing Wario, there’s no better choice for Waluigi than Walton Goggins. Goggins is a frequent collaborator with McBride, appearing in Vice Principals and The Righteous Gemstones. Because of this, the two would have the comedic chemistry that is required to pull off a successful Wario and Waluigi pairing. On top of that, Goggins is known for playing shady, greedy, comedic villains in The Righteous Gemstones, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and other projects. The pairing of Goggins and McBride would make them fantastic antagonists for the sequel, bringing life to the beloved video game characters.

8 Yoshi – Harvey Guillen

Harvey Guillen in Cursed Friends

Yoshi has been teased to appear in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, with the character featuring in the first Mario Bros. movie’s post-credits scene. While the post-credits scene has Yoshi use his typical video game voice, it would make sense for him to be fully voice-acted in the sequel, as previously mute characters like Donkey Kong were given voices in the first film. Harvey Guillen’s hyperactive sidekick role in Puss and Boots: The Last Wish perfectly captures what Illumination’s version of Yoshi would need, and having him lend his voice to the iconic green dinosaur would only make sense.

7 Daisy – Kaley Cuoco

Daisy, the stern and sporty princess of Sarasaland, is another one of the Mario franchise’s most popular royals, so she could easily appear in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2. Kaley Cuoco would be a fantastic choice for Daisy, as she proves in her TV series Harley Quinn. There, she plays an independent and athletic woman with a similar sense of determination, with Harley’s personality in the DC series matching that of Daisy’s. Cuoco has been voice acting for decades, meaning that The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 would be familiar territory.

6 Bowser Jr. – Sarah Silverman

Bowser Jr. is the mischievous child of Bowser, with him acting as the main antagonist of several Mario games. Although he didn’t appear in the first film, the chances of him appearing in the second film seem pretty high. Sarah Silverman’s voice would be a great fit for Bowser Jr., with her comedic role as Vanellope von Schweetz in Wreck-It Ralph showing she can play a royal rascal. While Bowser Jr. is typically a young boy, voice actresses are often cast as young children in animation. However, a female Bowser Jr. would also be an interesting spin. Either way, Sarah Silverman could be a great secondary antagonist in the sequel.

5 Rosalina – Tilda Swinton

Rosalina is elegant and mysterious, two aspects that Tilda Swinton perfectly captures. Swinton has recently gotten into voice acting, but she’s already great at it as Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio shows. Tilda Swinton’s regal voice would be perfect for the cosmic Princess Rosalina, with the mother of the Lumas demanding an actress with Swinton’s prestige.

4 Toadette – Kristen Schaal

Kristen Schaal as Hazel Wassername in 30 Rock

Toadette is the most notable female Toad in the Mario series, with one of her most iconic characteristics being her voice. Gravity Falls and Bob’s Burger actress Kristen Schaal would be a fantastic Toadette voice, with her range proving she could pull off the raspy character. Toadette is also incredibly excitable, similar to Schaal’s other characters such as Mabel Pines.

3 Toadsworth – Christopher Lloyd

Toadsworth is the eldest Toad and Princess Peach’s father figure, making it surprising that he didn’t appear in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. However, if the sequel decides to bring him back, actor Christopher Lloyd would be a great choice. While Lloyd’s age is perfect for Toadsworth, his still-impressive energy would allow him to bring life to the character. Lloyd does have some voice-acting experience, and Toadsworth could be the esteemed actor’s defining voice role.

2 Birdo – Hari Nef

Although it isn’t a well known fact, Mario‘s Birdo is actually transgender, being an early example of a transgender video game character. Because of this, it would be a great idea to let a trans actresses take on the role, and Hari Nef would be a great choice. While Nef is fairly new to the field of acting, she is set to appear in Barbie, showing that she’s willing to play in comedies similar to The Super Mario Bros. Movie. On top of that, Nef has an experience with video game films, appearing in the 2022 movie 1Up.

1 King K. Rool – Nick Offerman

With the Mario movie exploring the Donkey Kong universe, it would make sense for The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 to bring in Donkey Kong’s nemesis, King K. Rool. Nick Offerman would perfectly fit the character, thanks in part to him being familiar with video game adaptations due to his role as Frank in HBO’s The Last of Us. Even more interestingly though, Nick Offerman already played an animated pirate in The LEGO Movie, meaning he is already prepared to take on K. Rool in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2.
