Captain Sisko’s Son From Star Trek DS9 Was Almost In Picard Season 3, Reveals Showrunner

Star Trek: Picard showrunner Terry Matalas that there was a plan to include Jake Sisko (Cirroc Lofton) from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in season 3. A sequel to Star Trek: The Next Generation, Picard season 3 was also steeped in DS9 lore with the Changelings led by Captain Vadic (Amanda Plummer) serving as primary villains. Jake Sisko, the son of DS9‘s Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), could have had a natural role to play in Picard season 3’s conspiracy about Changelings infiltrating Starfleet.

Appearing on The 7th Rule podcast, Terry Matalas told hosts Cirroc Lofton and Ryan T. Husk about his aborted plan to include Jake Sisko in Star Trek: Picard season 3 after Cirroc mused about how Jake, who is a writer and a journalist, could have fit into certain scenes in Picard seasons 1 and 3. Read Matalas’ quote and watch The 7th Rule video, with the conversation starting at the 12:05 time stamp, below:

We had many Jake conversations in the season 3 writer’s room. And one of the ideas was… ‘Cause season 3’s a conspiracy, and people like Ro Laren and our heroes realizing that Changelings have infiltrated Starfleet… There’s a moment, actually, where Ro Laren says, “I even tried going to the press.” That was Jake Sisko.

We didn’t have the money, mostly, to do it… For set reasons… But you would cut to Jake Sisko, this journalist, who’s starting to put together… whose specialty is Starfleet because of, obviously, his background, and that’s his focus. He’s realizing weird sh*t’s going on. Things are being reported but then dismissed. He’s covering Frontier Day, but there’s a lot of things about it that don’t make sense. And as he goes down the rabbit hole, he starts to figure out what’s up.

But that was like its own series! Once we started talking about it, we were like… we can’t do it… What I did when it was all over was I pitched it as a podcast. I pitched it as Jake covers the Frontier Day… Hopefully, we will bring Jake back someday. We’ll get another bite at the apple.
