Captain Marvel’s MCU Return Has A Dark Twist Nobody’s Talking About

Captain Marvel’s MCU Return Has A Dark Twist Nobody’s Talking About

Warning! SPOILERS for Ms. Marvel episode 6.

Ms. Marvel ends with a surprising MCU cameo by Captain Marvel, but it also places Kamala Khan in a potentially perilous situation that viewers may have missed. As Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers travels across the cosmos, helping threatened planets that lack protective superheroes like The Avengers, who could otherwise defend them. Danvers and Khan appear to trade places in the Ms. Marvel finale, which could result in the latter being teleported into a setting or situation that is too dangerous for a fledgling superhero.

Ms. Marvel provides the MCU with a new version of the fan-favorite Marvel Comics superhero. As with many Marvel heroes, Kamala Khan is an ordinary citizen who unexpectedly receives fantastic powers, allowing her to live out her fantasy of becoming a real-life superhero. While her comic counterpart is an Inhuman (a human whose dormant powers are activated by contact with Terrigen Mists), the MCU version of Kamala Khan is revealed to be a mutant, tying her to the iconic X-Men superhero team.

Ms. Marvel’s season finale, “No Normal,” ends with Kamala Khan fully accepting her new role as Jersey City’s resident superhero and, in two heartwarming moments, receiving her hero outfit from her mother and her Ms. Marvel moniker from her father. Midway through the credits, however, Ms. Marvel’s mysterious bangle teleports her to an unknown location while bringing Captain Marvel into her bedroom. While it’s easy to be distracted by the sudden cameo of an Avenger, Kamala was likely transported to somewhere in deep space, potentially into a battle she might not be prepared for, or even into the Negative Zone from the comics, if her bangle is the MCU version of the comics’ Nega-Bands. In all cases, Kamala is likely in a perilous new situation that will need to be resolved in The Marvels.

Why Ms. Marvel Trapped In The Negative Zone Is So Bad

Captain Marvel’s MCU Return Has A Dark Twist Nobody’s Talking About

A prevailing theory regarding Ms. Marvel’s bangle is that it’s one of the Nega-Bands, an extremely powerful Kree weapon from the Marvel comics universe. The bangle’s removal from an unknown blue humanoid suggests that this may be the case in the MCU as well. This would mean that it not only grants Kamala her powers (along with other factors, such as the X-gene) but also has a connection to the Negative Zone.

The Negative Zone is a pocket dimension that exists within its respective universe (in this case, the mainstream MCU universe). This anti-matter zone is extremely perilous, and while Kamala Khan is shown to be quite powerful thus far, her lack of experience in combatting otherworldly threats and her bangle’s potentially unstable nature may put her in more danger than she can handle for now. Things don’t look too good for Kamala Khan at the end of Ms. Marvel, but this cliffhanger is sure to be resolved in the upcoming film, The Marvels.
