Just in time for the MCU’s The Marvels to release, the talented artist Russell Dauterman has unveiled his “Costumes Through The Ages” cover for Captain Marvel #5, featuring the iconic Captain Marvel. From Carol Danvers’ first appearance as Ms. Marvel in 1977’s Ms. Marvel #1 to her newest Hellfire Gala costume designed by Jen Bartel, Dauterman’s awe-inspiring cover honors the beloved Marvel hero’s many eras.

There is currently a Carol Renaissance happening at Marvel, with Captain Marvel starring as leader of the Avengers in The Avengers, recently wrapping up a limited solo series Captain Marvel: Dark Tempest, and debuting in an ongoing self-titled solo series.

Russell Dauterman’s “Costumes Through The Ages” covers for Marvel have become incredibly popular and beloved – featuring the many costumes of heroes like Thor and Storm – and his cover for Captain Marvel #5 is just as impressive, featuring so many costumes that some can only have their hands and arms fit on the cover.

Captain Marvel Has Changed Costumes For Every New Era Of Heroism

The incredible Carol Danvers got her start as a superhero – after her dramatic career as an Air Force pilot and NASA security officer – using the alter-ego Ms. Marvel, accessing her half-Kree abilities to fight crime, and debuting her first-ever heroic costume. Dauterman’s cover features this first costume, seen with a stomach cutout, and also features Carol’s first costume change, which only happened eight issues after Ms. Marvel’s debut, where she donned the same costume but without the cutout. As Carol Danvers grew, changed, and transitioned to new heroic monikers, so too did her costumes, beautifully documented in Dauterman’s cover.

Over the years, Carol’s costumes have ranged from controversially revealing to more militaristic looks, and Dauterman’s impressive cover captures them all. The gorgeous cover features obscure costumes, like Carol’s Age of Apocalypse costume or her outfit as a member of the Starjammers in the Mutant X universe, to iconic looks like her Binary form from Uncanny X-Men #164 and her black lightning bolt costume that she donned in Ms. Marvel (1977) #20. Captain Marvel’s many costumes have been a defining part of her journey as a hero, with some being controversial or disliked, and some becoming instant classics that will always be associated with Carol Danvers.

Captain Marvel’s latest adventure in Captain Marvel Vol. 11 – from writer Alyssa Wong and artists Jan Bazaldua and Bryan Valenza – sees Carol sporting her epic new Hellfire look, fighting her new villain Omen and looking stunning while doing it. Regardless of what costume Captain Marvel is wearing, she has always looked like an iconic hero and has remained a symbol of hope, strength, and acceptance throughout the Marvel Universe. As Carol continues in her role as leader of the Avengers, the quintessential hero Captain Marvel will go “Higher, further, faster,” honoring her legacy and looking toward her bright future.

Russell Dauterman’s breathtaking “Costumes Through The Ages” cover featuring the resilient and beautiful Captain Marvel is one of his best, highlighting Carol Danvers’ many eras of heroism, and the fabulous looks she rocked over her 50 years as a costumed superhero.
