Captain Marvel Officially Assembles a New Intergalactic Team of Marvels

Warning: Contains spoilers for Captain Marvel (2023) #6!Captain Marvel has assembled the Marvels again in the pages of her solo comic series, just not with the members featured in the MCU movie of the same name. The children of Marvel Comics’ original Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell, are major players in this series. When Genis-Vell falls prey to a villainous entity known as the Undone, Carol Danvers assembles a team including his sister Phyla-Vell and other heroes to save the world.

Captain Marvel (2023) #6 by Alyssa Wong and Ruairi Coleman sees siblings Genis-Vell and Phyla-Vell hastily reunited along with Carol Danvers. While Mar-Vell’s children were in the storyline “The Last of the Marvels” from Kelly Thompson’s 2019-2023 Captain Marvel run, three other heroes have now joined the Marvels to take down Genis-Vell when he’s enchanted by a cosmic villain.

Former Young Avengers Wiccan and Hulkling join the fight against the intergalactic entity, while new character Yuna Yang has been a focus since Alyssa Wong’s series debuted, serving as Carol Danvers’ sidekick. These characters, plus Phyla-Vell and Captain Marvel herself, stand together against the Undone as a fresh team of Marvels.

The New (and Old) Marvels Assemble From Space and Beyond

Though Carol Danvers and the children of Mar-Vell are often considered to be “Marvels,” other heroes have assembled to help fight the energy-eating Undone and protect the Nega-Bands. Yuna Yang first appeared in Captain Marvel (2023) #1 by Alyssa Wong and Jan Bazaldua and has been a main character in the run. A new Marvel cat burglar, Yuna gained a mental link to Carol after attempting to steal the Nega-Bands and witnessing the attack on Genis-Vell from the Omen, the Undone’s herald. Connected to Carol and the Nega-Bands, Yuna takes on a role in this story similar to Kamala Khan’s in the MCU.

Phyla-Vell, former Captain Marvel, crashes down to meet Carol in Maine and strategize. Another son of Mar-Vell, Emperor Hulkling, is attacked alongside his husband Wiccan are attacked in their space palace when Genis-Vell tries to steal their wedding rings made of Nega-Band scraps. Wiccan, Scarlet Witch’s son, is also Mar-Vell’s son-in-law considering his marriage to Hulkling. Chief accuser Lauri-Ell assists the couple, and they go to Earth to join Carol’s group. The world-ending entity has essentially turned Genis-Vell into a mind-controlled zombie, and the Marvel family join Carol and Yuna to stop Genis-Vell from stealing the Nega-Bands and giving power to the Undone.

The Team Assembles to Take Down Genis-Vell – But What’s Next?

This team of Marvels succeeds in stopping Genis-Vell, but at a cost. While Captain Marvel, Phyla-Vell, Hulkling, and Wiccan knock the brainwashed alien down, Yuna Yang has been on her own separate mission. She goes on a coffee date with a classmate and crush that Yuna discovers has secretly been the Omen all along. Separated from the other Marvels while they defeat Genis-Vell, Yuna ends up trapped in the Negative Zone with the Undone at the issue’s cliffhanger ending, and it’s up to Carol to save the new hero.

With Yuna Yang trapped by the Undone and separated from the others, it seems that the mental link that she has with Carol is the only thing that can save the cat burglar. Whether the team additions of Phyla-Vell, Hulkling, and Wiccan will return soon still remains to be seen. Solicits for future issues highlight Carol and Yuna, but it’s possible that even more Marvels like Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan will have to assemble as the villain’s power grows. Nevertheless, the intergalactic heroes gathered by Captain Marvel prove to be a strong group of Marvels worth revisiting.
