Captain Marvel Admits Her Greatest Weakness

Captain Marvel Admits Her Greatest Weakness

Warning! Spoilers for Captain Marvel #28 below!

Captain Marvel is fighting to prevent a Marvel future where billions of innocent people die and her closest allies perish as well. In order to do so, Carol Danvers is taking on her big weakness head-on, as she’ll become a magic user herself in order to combat the rise of a magic-using villain, Ove, who just infiltrated her own timeline.

Carol Danvers has just returned to Marvel Comics’ main timeline after spending some time in a dark future that was ruled by Ove. The dictator is the son of Namor and the Enchantress and the ruler of New Atlantis. He brought Captain Marvel to the future so he could use her powers to travel back in time and hatch his plan for domination. His plan was ultimately successful as he used magic to gain the upper hand on Carol. Upon returning to her own timeline, Captain Marvel worried greatly about the whereabouts of Ove, while also breaking up with James Rhodes in order to make sure his future daughter, also named Carol, was born.

In previews for Captain Marvel #28 by Kelly Thompson, Jacopo Camagni, Espen Grundetjern, and VC’s Clayton Cowles, Carol is shown having nightmares about the dark future where all of those closest to her are dead. Her nightmares include Captain America being impaled, and her fellow Avengers including Hawkeye and Black Widow asking her how she could have let Ove free before they get blown to smithereens by a bomb.

Carol wakes from her dream and admits to herself her nightmares are getting worse. She blames herself for Ove coming to the main timeline and fears he will carry out his plan and kill billions of people. In order to combat Ove, she’s going to overcome one of her greatest weaknesses – magic. While hooking up with Doctor Strange after her breakup with Rhodey had little to do with her wanting to learn magic on top of her already extremely powerful abilities, it seems Captain Marvel realizes the only way to defeat a magic user like Ove, is to become one. That way, she can understand Ove and counter him before he causes mass death and destruction.

Previews for Captain Marvel #28 suggest Carol will become Marvel’s new Sorceress Supreme. Captain Marvel will seemingly learn magic alongside Doctor Strange in order to become a more effective weapon against Ove and prevent him from taking everything from her. Mastering her weakness and ineffectiveness against magic is one way to fight against a fellow sorcerer, while subsequently making Captain Marvel, one of Marvel’s most powerful heroes already, that much stronger. Captain Marvel #28 is in stores next week.
