Captain Marvel 2 Will Connect To Ms. Marvel’s MCU Powers Change

Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani explains that the change in her character’s powers from the comics will be explained further in the upcoming film The Marvels. Ms. Marvel stars Vellani as the title character, a teenage girl named Kamala Khan who idolizes Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) and eventually develops her own cosmic powers. The six-episode season introducing Ms. Marvel will premiere on Disney+ on June 8, 2022. However, that’s not the last that MCU fans will see of the character in the coming years. She is set to reprise her role on July 28, 2023 in The Marvels, the sequel to Captain Marvel.

In the comics, the character of Ms. Marvel is a relatively recent creation, so she hasn’t had time for many variations on her character to be created. This is why fans noticed rather quickly that her power set as displayed in the trailer for the series has been altered substantially, drawing the ire of certain readers. In the original comics, the character has the power to reshape her body like a more malleable combination of Mr. Fantastic and Ant-Man. However, the trailer reveals that her cosmic powers come in the form of generating light that she can shape at her will, which is visually more similar to the power set of the sorcerer Doctor Strange.

During an interview with SFX Magazine (via Ms. Marvel UK), Vellani defended her character’s powers from these detractors by making an important revelation. She said that, while the exact nature of Ms. Marvel’s newfound powers won’t fully be explained in the series, they’re setting up an important arc for The Marvels. Did I get hit with gamma rays?” No, it’s seemingly none of those things. It goes to her own past and her heritage and lineage.

So far, no detailed information has been revealed about the plot of The Marvels, which completed production earlier this month. Other than the fact that Captain Marvel will reunite with Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau and that both of them will encounter Ms. Marvel, the exact nature of their adventure is completely obscure. However, given Vellani’s quote and the way the MCU folded new character America Chavez into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it’s possible that the plot will center around a threat either unearthed by or targeting Ms. Marvel, prompting more exploration of her world and backstory.

With the short gap between Ms. Marvel and The Marvels, it will be easy for both projects to be very directly interconnected. While it might frustrate fans to have to wait for more explanation of the source of these powers, it is reassuring that there will be answers down the road.
