Captain Britain: Henry Cavill’s Dream MCU Role Is Officially a Match for Thor, Marvel Confirms

Warning: contains spoilers for Ultimate Universe #1!

Captain Britain, Henry Cavill’s dream MCU role is officially a match for Thor, Marvel has confirmed. Captain Britain is a fan favorite character, and acclaimed actor Henry Cavill has expressed interest in playing him in the MCU. While Captain Britain is powerful, he has not shown the ability to go toe to toe with Asgardians such as Thor, but in Ultimate Universe #1, he does just that.

Ultimate Universe #1 is written by Jonathan Hickman and drawn by Stefano Caselli. Thor has been sprung from his jail by the new Ultimate Doctor Doom and Iron Lad. The Maker, the former leader of the world, had stolen items that would have given people super-powers, in a bid to shape the world to his desires. Doom, Iron Lad, Thor and Sif head to Latveria to retrieve the stolen goods. Upon arrival, they see the containers the Maker is storing his ill-begotten materials in and just as Thor goes to open them, he is stabbed by Captain Britain’s Sword of Might, which seriously injures the Asgardian.

Captain Britain Occupies a Unique Spot in Marvel Lore

Not only is Captain Britain a fan favorite, but he is also important to Marvel history, being one of the first characters created specifically for the British comics market. He also has the distinction of being one of the few Marvel characters written by Alan Moore. Captain Britain proved popular across the pond and eventually began teaming up with American heroes. Captain Britain has been a member of Excalibur as well as heading up a multiversal corps of other Captain Britains. While he may not enjoy the same recognition as Captain America or Iron Man, Captain Britain is still an integral part of the Marvel Universe.

Captain Britain is a Favorite of Henry Cavill

He is also a favorite of Henry Cavill, who played Superman in the now defunct DCEU. A few enterprising fans created art depicting Cavill as Captain Britain, and the actor saw them. Later, when asked if he would play a character in the MCU, he replied he had seen the fan art and thought it would be cool to play Captain Britain. Cavill pointed to Chris Evans’ “modernized” take on Captain America as to how he would play Brian Braddock. At the time of the interview, Cavill was still under contract to Warner Brothers, but now with the DCEU over, it frees him up to play Captain Britain.

While fans wait to see if this bit of dream casting comes to life, Marvel has positioned Captain Britain as a major player in the new Ultimate universe. Thor is a powerful hero, no matter what world it is, and this version of Captain Britain was nearly able to kill the God of Thunder. This is a major step up for Captain Britain, who while being depicted as powerful in the past, was hardly a god-killer. Ultimate Universe #1 establishes a new, more deadly status quo for Captain Britain, making Henry Cavill’s dream MCU character more than a match for Thor.
