Captain America Movies In Order: How To Watch Steve Rogers’ Films

Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America, was one of Marvel Studios’ primary heroes in the Infinity Saga, appearing in many major projects in the MCU. Chris Evans debuted as Steve Rogers in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, a 1940s-set adventure that saw the skinny Rogers transformed into the world’s first superhero, Captain America. After being awoken in the modern era following almost seven decades on ice, Steve Rogers founded the MCU’s original Avengers team and played a key role in some of Marvel Studios’ biggest projects prior to his retirement at the end of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, where he finally received his long-sought-after happy ending.

Over his eight-year-long career with Marvel Studios, Chris Evans appeared in a total of eleven MCU projects, though not all of these were major roles, with a few being only cameo appearances. As one of the franchise’s most well-known and profitable heroes, Steve Rogers’ Captain America was at the core of every Avengers project, and his solo films changed the status quo of the MCU in significant ways. The mantle has now passed on to the MCU’s Sam Wilson, who is set to make his theatrical debut as the hero in Phase 5’s Captain America: Brave New World, the first Captain America project not to feature Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers.

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

Captain America Movies In Order: How To Watch Steve Rogers’ Films

Box Office: $370.6 million

Run-Time: 124 minutes

Cast: Chris Evans (Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America), Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter), Tommy Lee Jones (Chester Phillips), Hugo Weaving (Johann Schmidt, a.k.a. Red Skull), Sebastian Stan (James “Bucky” Barnes), Dominic Cooper (Howard Stark), Stanley Tucci (Dr. Abraham Erskine), Toby Jones (Arnim Zola)

Captain America: The First Avenger was released in 2011 as part of the MCU’s Phase 1 but was primarily set in the midst of World War II, where the idea of Captain America was born. Steve Rogers was transformed into the hero after being subjected to an experiment involving Dr. Abraham Erskine’s super-soldier serum, enhancing Rogers’ physical and tactical attributes, which allowed him to take on the Red Skull, the leader of HYDRA. The end of The First Avenger saw Rogers wake up in the modern era, leading directly into 2012’s The Avengers, though his feelings of being out-of-time would permeate through all of his subsequent MCU adventures.

The Avengers (2012)

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers in The Avengers

Box Office: $1.519 billion

Run-Time: 143 minutes

Cast: Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man), Chris Evans (Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton, a.k.a. Hawkeye), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner, a.k.a. Hulk), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Clark Gregg (Phil Coulson)

Following five solo projects in the MCU’s Phase 1, The Avengers brought each of the titular heroes together for the first time under the watchful eye of SHIELD and its Director, Nick Fury. The Avengers came together to battle Thor’s brother, Loki, who opened a portal over New York City, allowing hordes of Chitauri to wreak havoc. The Avengers’ teamwork, power, and skill set them up to be celebrated heroes in the MCU’s future, and Captain America was pivotal in this, as he was implemented as the de facto leader of the team – he being the only one with actual experience fighting in a war.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers and Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff in Captain America The Winter Soldier

Box Office: $714.4 million

Run-Time: 136 minutes

Cast: Chris Evans (Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. Black Widow), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Sebastian Stan (James “Bucky” Barnes, a.k.a. the Winter Soldier), Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson, a.k.a. Falcon), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Robert Redford (Alexander Pierce)

After the Avengers went their separate ways following their saving of New York, Steve Rogers joined SHIELD as the organization’s most skilled soldier, though this wouldn’t last long. Released in 2014, Captain America: The Winter Soldier marked the collapse of SHIELD after HYDRA was revealed to be still growing within it, yet the return of Bucky Barnes – now known as the Winter Soldier – Rogers’ childhood friend, shifts Captain America’s own focus. Captain America: The Winter Soldier was the MCU’s first spy thriller, inspiring later projects to do the same, and is widely regarded as one of the Infinity Saga’s strongest projects.

Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015)

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers in Avengers Age of Ultron

Box Office: $1.403 billion

Run-Time: 141 minutes

Cast: Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man), Chris Evans (Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton, a.k.a. Hawkeye), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner, a.k.a. Hulk), Paul Bettany (Vision), Elizabeth Olsen (Wanda Maximoff), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Pietro Maximoff), James Spader (Ultron)

Following on from The Avengers and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the Avengers had banded together again to take down HYDRA outposts across the world, but their re-acquiring of Loki’s stolen scepter allowed Stark and Banner to create Ultron. Initially designed as a peace-keeping artificial intelligence, Ultron soon realized that the only way to keep the peace was to wipe out humanity. While Age of Ultron is often viewed as inferior to The Avengers, the story’s global stakes were excellent, and Age of Ultron began to formulate the cracks between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark’s relationship that would become important in Captain America: Civil War.

Captain America: Civil War (2016)

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers and Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark in Captain America Civil War

Box Office: $1.153 billion

Run-Time: 147 minutes

Cast: Chris Evans (Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America), Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. Black Widow), Sebastian Stan (James “Bucky” Barnes, a.k.a. the Winter Soldier), Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson, a.k.a. Falcon), Don Cheadle (James “Rhodey” Rhodes, a.k.a. War Machine), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton, a.k.a. Hawkeye), Chadwick Boseman (T’Challa, a.k.a. Black Panther), Elizabeth Olsen (Wanda Maximoff), Paul Bettany (Vision), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang, a.k.a. Ant-Man), Tom Holland (Peter Parker, a.k.a. Spider-Man), Daniel Brühl (Helmut Zemo)

2016’s Captain America: Civil War became a pseudo-Avengers film as it included practically all the MCU’s heroes (except for Thor and the Hulk) and introduced new heroes Black Panther and Spider-Man. Civil War saw Rogers and Stark butt heads over the implementation of the Sokovia Accords following a tragic Avengers mission in Lagos, with Bucky Barnes caught in the middle as he was framed for killing the King of Wakanda. Civil War marked the end of the current iteration of Avengers, which led directly into the separated storylines of Avengers: Infinity War, and saw Steve Rogers temporarily abandon the Captain America moniker, becoming a fugitive.

Marvel Studios’ Infinity Saga had all been leading to the epic events of Avengers: Infinity War, as Thanos finally began his quest to collect the six Infinity Stones and wipe out half the population of the universe. After the Avengers had disbanded in Civil War, several separate stories were followed in Infinity War as many small teams tried to thwart Thanos at different points in his journey. However, they ultimately failed, and the Mad Titan got his desire, causing many of Earth’s Mightiest to turn to dust and leaving Steve Rogers – still not operating as Captain America – and the remaining Avengers to try and pick up the pieces.

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers in Avengers Endgame

Box Office: $2.799 billion

Run-Time: 181 minutes

Cast: Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man), Chris Evans (Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton, a.k.a. Hawkeye), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner, a.k.a. Hulk), Don Cheadle (James “Rhodey” Rhodes, a.k.a. War Machine), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang, a.k.a. Ant-Man), Brie Larson (Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Josh Brolin (Thanos)

Set five years after Thanos’ snap in Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame caught up with the remaining Avengers as they embarked on a journey through time to collect the Infinity Stones for themselves and reverse the devastation. While they eventually succeed, a version of Thanos from 2014 makes his way into the future and faces the Avengers in an epic and cinematic battle, with Captain America at the helm. Endgame saw Steve Rogers finally gift audiences that long-anticipated “Avengers Assemble” moment, and ended with the hero traveling into the past to retire with Peggy Carter, getting the happy life he’d always dreamed of, and passing the shield to Sam Wilson.

Every Captain America Movie In The MCU In Order

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers in Spider-Man Homecoming

While Chris Evans has had seven main appearances as Captain America in the MCU, he has also appeared in cameos in a variety of other projects. This allowed the MCU’s Infinity Saga to keep a great deal of consistency, particularly since Chris Evans appeared as Captain America at least once a year between his debut in Captain America: The First Avenger and his departure in Avengers: Endgame. He was one of the most recognizable characters of the MCU’s Infinity Saga, and his absence is surely being felt in the wake of Endgame, though Sam Wilson will carry on his legacy in the MCU’s Phase 5 and beyond.
