Captain America Cosplay Updates American Dream’s Far-Future Costume for the MCU Era

A cosplay from Lane Fenimore depicting a female version of Captain America makes for the perfect update of American Dream. American Dream is the future version of Cap, and she is actually the niece of Sharon Carter.

Shared to Instagram by photographer Ryan Sims, the image shows off Lane Fenimore’s Captain America paired with fellow cosplayer Jake Fogg as WWII-era Steve Rogers. While clearly inspired by Cap’s MCU look, Fenimore’s cosplay could alternately be taken as American Dream, the alternate future version of Captain America.

The niece of SHIELD agent Sharon Carter, Shannon Carter was hired as a tour guide for Avengers Mansion, which had been remodeled into a museum following the disbandment of the original Avengers. While Sam Wilson was entrusted with the shield in the MCU following the events of Avengers: Endgame, there is still ample opportunity to expand Cap’s world and include characters like American Dream, and Lane Fenimore’s cosplay shows how the character could work in the MCU.

American Dream Is One of the Few Heroes to Be Entrusted With Cap’s Shield

First appearing in 1998’s A-Next #1 by Tom DeFalco, Ron Frenz, Ron Lim, Al Milgrom, Brett Breeding, Bob Sharen, and Jim Novak, American Dream was created for Marvel’s MC2 line. Also known as “Marvel Comics 2,” this alternate future universe spun out of What If…? #105 by DeFalco, Frenz, Bill Sienkiewicz, Matt Webb, and Chris Eliopoulos, which depicts a future world where Peter Parker’s daughter Mayday has taken on her father’s mantle as Spider-Girl. The whole universe is about the next generation of Marvel Heroes, many of whom are the children of the classic heroes. In addition to May, there is also Wild Thing, the daughter of Wolverine and Elektra, as well as J2, the teenage son of the Juggernaut who decides to reject his father’s ways and become a hero.

Shannon Carter was eager to join the new Avengers appearing in A-Next, so she fashioned her own costume based on Captain America’s and eventually proves herself as a hero worthy to join the team. While she originally made use of mini-discs shaped like Cap’s shield, American Dream is later entrusted with the real shield after she helps rescue the original Avengers from a dark, parallel dimension. Dream also proves herself worthy of joining the Captain America Corps, a collection of the various Captains America throughout time who are assembled to defeat villain Superia, who plots to take the place of the original Captain America following WWII.

While it isn’t necessarily intended as such, cosplayer Lane Fenimore’s Captain America provides the perfect look for an MCU version of American Dream. This underrated legacy character certainly deserves such a spotlight.
