Captain America 4 Set Photos: 10 Reveals About The Story, Returning Characters & More

Production is underway for Marvel Studios’ Captain America: New World Order, and two waves of new set photos have revealed returning characters, first looks at new characters, and hints at the sequel’s plot as well. The first Captain America movie to star Anthony Mackie in the titular role after Sam Wilson inherited the shield and mantle from Steve Rogers, New World Order is shaping up to be a major chapter in Phase 5 that will shake up entire status quo of the MCU. As such, these new set photos generate a lot of excitement ahead of an official first trailer.Captain America: New World Order will be taking place after The Falcon and the Winter Soldier series on Disney+ which saw Sam Wilson take on the Captain America mantle in earnest after Steve Rogers gave his iconic shield to him at the end of Avengers: Endgame. With a title like New World Order, it’s expected the world and country the new Captain America has sworn to protect will be facing a time of great upheaval. Keeping that in mind, here’s what’s been revealed thus far from the recent set photos for Captain America: New World Order, set to release in theaters on May 3, 2024.

10 Captain America 4 Set Photos Reveal Hulk Villain (The Leader)

Actor Tim Blake Nelson has been spotted on set, having been confirmed to be reprising his role from The Incredible Hulk as Doctor Samuel Sterns. In the original Marvel Comics, Sterns became the Hulk villain known as the Leader, his exposure to gamma radiation making him as smart as the Hulk is strong. Likewise, the end of the 2008 film did see drops of Bruce Banner’s gamma-irradiated blood landing on Sterns and mutating his head, teasing a comic-accurate transformation into a super-genius. With Sterns having been absent in the MCU since The Incredible Hulk, it will be exciting to see what he’s been up to in the interim.

The new set photos also feature Harrison Ford with Marvel Studios having cast him as Thaddeus Ross in Captain America: New World Order, taking over the role from the late William Hurt. It’s been confirmed that Ross will be President of the United States, an indication that the movie will feature a strong political narrative as the country and Captain America adjust to the new leadership. Having been a rival to Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk and later a key figure behind the Sokovia Accords in Captain America: Civil War, it’s also been rumored that Ross will finally become the Red Hulk as he does in the comics.

8 Marvel’s New Falcon Returns In Captain America 4

Danny Ramirez as Jaoquin Torres in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Actor Danny Ramirez has been seen shooting scenes with Anthony Mackie, confirming his return as Joaquín Torres. Becoming an ally to Sam Wilson in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Torres was given Sam’s old set of wings near the series’ end, a tease that he’ll become the MCU’s new Falcon now that Wilson is Captain America. While Torres’ Marvel Comics counterpart had legitimate mutations as a human/falcon hybrid, it’s more likely that the MCU version will simply have the old wings Wilson no longer needs after the Wakandans made him his own star-spangled suit – complete with its own flight rig.

7 Captain America: New World Order To Feature A Funeral Scene

The majority of the new set photos for Captain America: New World Order appear to take place during a funeral scene. To that end, many of the featured characters in the photos are in formal clothes and some are in military dress, an indication that someone of great significance has passed away. While it’s been speculated that Steve Rogers himself might have died after a long and happy life following his decision to stay in the past with Peggy Carter in Avengers: Endgame, it’s currently unknown exactly who will meet their demise and the details surrounding it.

6 Liv Tyler Returns As Betty Ross

One of the funeral’s attendees is none other than Liv Tyler, returning as Betty Ross, daughter of Thaddeus Ross, and former love-interest of Bruce Banner. Like Sterns, Betty has not been seen in the MCU since 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. However, it makes sense that she would be back since her father is becoming President of the United States. That being said, Betty and her father had been estranged due to Thaddeus Ross’ past obsession with hunting down the Hulk. As such, perhaps the funeral is for President Ross himself, explaining Betty’s appearance as a final act of closure with her father and their complicated relationship.

5 Sam Wilson Will Become Injured In Captain America 4

The new set photos also feature Anthony Mackie in multiple scenes such as Smyth’s Diner, a location from Marvel Comics. However, he’s also present and dressed formally for the funeral scene, though his arm is notably in a sling. As such, It’s certainly possible that Sam Wilson will become injured during the same incident that led to this mystery character’s death. Additionally, an inhibiting injury implies that it will happen near the end of the film and by extension, the funeral as well. After all, Sam Wilson doesn’t have the super-soldier serum running through his veins like Steve Rogers did, granting him an accelerated healing factor.

4 First Looks At Shira Haas and Xosha Roquemore

The funeral set photos also provide first looks at Shira Haas and Xosha Roquemore’s characters. Haas will be playing Sabra, an Israeli superhero from the comics who’s also a mutant. Rather than the super-soldier serum, all of Sabra’s abilities and physical enhancements come from her mutation. Likewise, her presence at what is likely a military funeral suggests she’ll also have ties with the Israeli government just like her Marvel Comics counterpart. Conversely, Roquemore’s character is currently unknown, though it’s believed her role will be pivotal. She seems to have military ties as well based on her uniform in the set photos for Captain America: New World Order.

3 Captain America: New World Order Set Photo Shows Serpent Society Villains

In one recent set photo for Captain America: New World Order, two members of Marvel Comics’ Serpent Society can be seen at what appears to be an airport. One of these characters, suspected to be either King Cobra or Constrictor, is portrayed by WWE superstar Seth Rollins.

The other seems to be the Marvel Comics character Diamondback due to the diamond insignia on her chest. The Serpent Society has long been rumored to be the villains of Captain America: New World Order, and these set photos practically supply confirmation of this.

2 Captain America: New World Order Set Photo Reveals Sam Wilson’s New Suit

sam wilson has a new suit in captain america new world order

Sam Wilson received a brand-new suit for his role as Captain America in the season finale of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier; however, Captain America: New World Order will see Sam sport another new costume. Marvel Studios has a pattern of upgrading superhero suits for every project they appear in – this has always been the case for the likes of Steve Rogers’ Captain America, Tony Stark’s Iron Man, and Thor. Sam Wilson’s new Captain America suit is a mix of his vibranium suit from the Wakandans and Steve Rogers’ Winter Soldier suit, which was more subtle and sported a darker blue.

1 Captain America’s New Suit May Hint At The Movie’s Missions And Tone

steve rogers stealth suit in captain america the winter soldier

The MCU’s new Captain America suit is a mixture of Sam Wilson’s costume from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Steve Rogers’ stealth suit specifically – the one worn by the Avenger during the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This perhaps suggests that Captain America: New World Order will take on similar tones to the Phase 2 Captain America film. This lends itself perfectly to the more grounded espionage themes of the MCU’s Phase 5, with projects such as Secret Invasion and Thunderbolts playing into these themes also.
