Callisto Protocol Won’t Skip Last-Gen, PS4 & Xbox One Release Confirmed

Callisto Protocol Won’t Skip Last-Gen, PS4 & Xbox One Release Confirmed

Developer Striking Distance has confirmed that its debut title The Callisto Protocol will also launch across PS4 and Xbox One consoles. New details about the sci-fi horror game are making the rounds thanks to Game Informer’s Callisto Protocol cover story, which the publication teased a little less than a week ago. But the experience itself entered the public consciousness in late 2020 when Striking Distance unveiled its Dead Space-inspired project during The Game Awards that December.

As many already know, the constant Dead Space comparisons constitute no mere accident. Striking Distance CEO Glen Schofield served as one of the creative minds behind Visceral Games’ and EA’s groundbreaking survival horror series. And it looks as though that DNA bleeds heavily into the terror-inducing world of Callisto Protocol, which is in development for PC and consoles. Up until now, the expectation was that Callisto Protocol would only see the light of day on PC and current-gen consoles; fortunately, Striking Distance has cleared the air on this front.

At a time when upcoming games like Gotham Knights have axed PS4 and Xbox One versions, The Callisto Protocol will do the opposite. Windows Central notes that in Game Informer Issue #346, the publication confirms that current-gen console owners will be able to pick up a copy of The Callisto Protocol. In addition, developer Striking Distance and publisher Krafton still plan to release the horror title in 2022, though a specific due date presently remains under wraps.

The latest Game Informer issue features a whole host of other interesting details about the cross-gen experience from Striking Distance. For one, The Callisto Protocol protagonist Jacob Lee, portrayed by actor Josh Duhamel, wields both melee and ranged combat weapons. And he’ll use said weapons to fend off the grotesque enemies now known as Biophages.

While new pieces of information and concept art for The Callisto Protocol circulate online, there’s still plenty that developers have yet to showcase. Those interested in the title especially can’t wait to see gameplay footage of Jacob in action. Fortunately, with a series of digital gaming events right around the corner, reason suggests Striking Distance and Krafton will unleash footage of some kind in the not-so-distant future. Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest kicks off on Thursday, June 9, for example, with Xbox and Bethesda hosting a joint press conference just a few days later on Sunday, June 12.

The Callisto Protocol hits PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in 2022.
