More Information about the 2022 installment for the Call of Duty franchise has leaked, and one notable leaker claims the next installment of the first-person shooter series will feature the return of classic Modern Warfare 2 maps. Rumors have already begun to surface about the next Call of Duty title, as recent leaks have revealed that the next game is expected to be a sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare – which took a more realistic approach to the series.

Released in 2009, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the sequel to Call of Duty 4, which received critical acclaim after hitting shelves two years prior. While Call of Duty 4 was a force to be reckoned with, Modern Warfare 2 surpassed its predecessor and is still touted as one of the best multiplayer shooters ever made. The title excelled in gameplay, mechanics and systems; but stood out most for its distinctive maps located in urban environments – and additionally featured elements that made them unique. Modern Warfare 2 contains some of the most recognizable locations from the Call of Duty series, and maps like Rust have made appearances in later series installments.

Industry writer and notable leaker Tom Henderson has posted a new video (via Charlie INTEL) that sheds some new light on the 2022 Call of Duty installment – and the possibility of the return of classic Modern Warfare 2 maps. During the 20-minute video, Henderson details several aspects players should know about the upcoming title; including new information on its campaign mode, the reason behind the cancelation of Modern Warfare 2 Remastered‘s multiplayer and its brand-new DMZ game mode receiving expanded versions of classic Modern Warfare 2 maps. The leaker claims DMZ mode is built from the ground up and will feature an overhauled AI system with PvP and PvE – similar to Escape from Tarkov.

While Henderson listed a handful of new information regarding the upcoming title, it is still unknown if Modern Warfare 2 will see the return of classic Call of Duty features not featured in recent entries. Call of Duty‘s latest installment, Vanguard proves that complexity isn’t always better and players have voiced desires for a better-streamlined and a create-a-class system of previous installments. The franchise’s prestige and progression system were also changed with 2019’s Modern Warfare, and the return of both systems are frequently requested by fans, seeing as they were considered to be more rewarding.

Tom Henderson is a reputable source, having leaked details about the previous Call of Duty titles as well as many other titles that have yet to be released still in development. Despite this factor, the leaker has stated that players should take all information with a grain of salt, so those excited are expected to wait for an official announcement from Activision, as the rumored title is set to release later in the year.
