Cable Helped Change the Course of the X-Men Franchise in the Early 1990s

Cable Was Very Much of His Time, But Also Managed to Transcend It As Well

Cable’s arrival in 1990s New Mutants #87 heralded a new era not only for the flailing title, but for the mutant franchise as a whole. The mysterious Cable captivated fans, and soon New Mutants was reorganized as X-Force, with him in charge. Cable’s origin was kept vague for years after his first appearance. The “mysterious loner” archetype was popular at the time, embodied in characters such as Wolverine, Gambit, and Cable. Indeed, it could be argued Cable helped popularize the trend, which led to a glut of knock-offs in the years following his first appearance.

However, Cable’s true origins were revealed, and rather than kill the character’s mystique, it made him all the more compelling. Fans learned Cable was actually the son of Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor (a clone of Jean Grey), and his true first appearance was in 1986’s Uncanny X-Men #201. Infected with a techno-virus, the child was sent to the future, where he grew up to become Cable. Giving Cable a link to the Summers family enhanced his backstory. Cable’s compelling backstory ensured he would have a shelf-life decades beyond the derivative clones that ensued.
