Dune: Part Two has already outgrossed the original movie as it approaches a major milestone in week 3. The 2021 original, which adapted the first half of the Frank Herbert novel of the same name, had a compromised day-and-date streaming release that limited its theatrical prospects, though that didn’t prevent it from becoming the 12th highest-grossing movie of the year with a worldwide gross of $433.9 million. Immediately out of the gate, its sequel easily surpassed it, with an opening weekend total of $82.5 million that more than doubled the original’s $41 million opening.
Per Variety, by Monday the Dune: Part Two box office is projected to reach a total of $494.7 million worldwide. This total comes from a domestic gross of $208 million plus $289.4 million from international markets, marking the movie as the highest-grossing release of the year in both markets. It is also extremely close to passing the $500 million milestone, a benchmark that only nine movies passed in 2023, including the smash hits Barbie and Oppenheimer as well as the previous Timothée Chalamet-led project Wonka.
More to come…
