Bucky Proves The Winter Soldier’s One Advantage Over Captain America

Warning! This post contains a PREVIEW for Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #6

In the new preview for Marvel Comics’ Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty, Bucky Barnes’ Winter Soldier confirms his biggest advantage over Steve Rogers. Even though Barnes was freed from his Russian assassin brainwashing years ago in the established canon, he still carries a good amount of darkness alongside a repertoire of deadly skills, making him the perfect covert agent in the Marvel Universe. In contrast, subtlety and working in the gray is something the more symbolic Captain America can’t really do seeing as how he’s essentially the American flag anthropomorphized.

Previously in Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty, Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes have joined forces to take on the new shadow organization known as the Outer Circle. Using the iconography of Captain America’s shield as a symbol of their dark power, it’s revealed that the centuries-old Outer Circle is a vast network with two Inner Circles of agents who obey as well as Steve Rogers himself, the Super-Soldier meant to be their Star at the center of their “game”. Likewise, Bucky has discovered his own secret role in the Outer Circle as one of five “Starpoint” assassins, having been selected as a child to be their pawn long before he ever enlisted and met Captain America during WWII (which was all by design including his transformation into the Winter Soldier).

While this culminated in Bucky shooting through Cap to kill one of the Outer Circle’s leaders known as the Revolution, Steve refuses to let Bucky walk his new path alone in the new preview for Sentinel of Liberty #6 from Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, and Carmen Carnero. Believing he can become the new Revolution and take down the organization from within, the Winter Soldier asks for Steve’s trust. Here are the preview pages and synopsis for the upcoming issue:

Why The Winter Soldier Is Choosing To Stay With The Outer Circle

  • CAPTAIN AMERICA: SENTINEL OF LIBERTY #6
  • Captain America has misjudged his place in the battle against the elusive Outer Circle…and it’s about to cost him everything. The Century Game has been turned upside down. And when the dust settles, Steve Rogers’ world will never be the same again.

Confirming that he’s always been able to go places and do things Steve can’t, Bucky proves his key advantage over Captain America (even if Steve doesn’t like it). He’s able to operate in spaces where morality is more blurred and questionable. While they’ll likely brawl over it in the full issue, it stands to reason that Bucky will still get what he wants: an opportunity to meaningfully strike at the Outer Circle from within. While Bucky is willing to accept the risks and the danger, it should be noted that the Winter Soldier could be corrupted by the new power along the way.

At any rate, the fact that this current arc has secretly been more about Bucky than Steve is quite an entertaining surprise. While Captain America and the Winter Soldier may be at odds over how the Outer Circle should be dealt with, there’s no denying Bucky is the best choice to take the more covert approach and burn it down from the inside out. Here’s hoping he’s successful and remains a hero while he does it. The full Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #6 releases November 9th.
