Bryan Cranston Addresses Malcolm In The Middle Revival Possibility

Bryan Cranston has opened up about the possibility of a Malcolm in the Middle reunion film. Linwood Boomer’s Fox sitcom aired seven seasons between 2000 and 2007, gaining widespread acclaim from critics and nabbing seven Emmys across its run. Frankie Muniz led the sitcom as the titular child prodigy Malcolm, while Cranston starred as his father Hal, with Jane Kaczmarek, Christopher Kennedy Masterson, Justin Berfield, and Erik Per Sullivan appearing as the rest of the members of the dysfunctional family. Heavy on pop-punk influences and 2000s youth culture, Malcolm in the Middle continues to be praised for its performances, storylines, and intelligent singe-cam filming style.

Now, in an interview with E! News, Cranston has addressed the possibility of a Malcolm in the Middle reunion actually happening.

As the actor acknowledges, there have already been some serious discussions about a Malcolm in the Middle revival movie. Cranston did not specify if anything was yet concrete, but he expressed great enthusiasm in revisiting his role as Hal and reuniting with his sitcom family 20 years later. Read what he said below:

There was some talk about the possibility of doing like a reunion movie of Malcolm in the Middle. We had such a great family on that, and I certainly would be open to that if there was a good idea that came up like, ‘Oh, that would be fantastic to explore what happened to this family 20 years later.’ I can’t believe it’s already that, but that would be fun to do.

Will A Malcolm In The Middle Revival Ever Actually Happen

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time that Cranston has expressed interest in reuniting the Malcolm in the Middle cast in some form on the screen. In 2016, Cranston revealed that he “sure hopes” that Malcolm in the Middle will be revived in some form. Back then, revival movies weren’t exactly mainstream, so Cranston floated ideas about the sitcom making a possible comeback as a rebooted Netflix show or a one-off miniseries. He stated that as the business continues to evolve, he isn’t sure what a Malcolm in the Middle revival would exactly look like, but considering he continues to share a good rapport with all his co-stars, the entire cast would definitely want to revisit their characters.

While Cranston has stressed that his co-stars are also on board for a Malcolm in the Middle revival, there have been reports that a certain hold-up has prevented the plans from coming to fruition. In 2021, on the Steve-O’s podcast, Muniz acknowledged that Cranston has been trying earnestly to bring the Malcolm in the Middle family back together. He himself stated that if a reunion were to happen, he “would be down, 100 percent” for returning to reprise his role. However, he did mention that a certain cast member, whom he refuses to identify, wasn’t ready for a reunion. Muniz has since followed up on his remarks, by acknowledging that Cranston is already working on a Malcolm in the Middle revival script, and now the latter’s new comments only offer affirmation about the same.

The recent success of sitcom reunions like Friends: The Reunion and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Reunion has made a Malcolm in the Middle revival all the more possible. Of course, Cranston wants to have a reunion with the entire cast, but as the new plans for the Zoey 101 revival movie are any indication, the Malcolm in the Middle revival movie can still happen even if one or two cast members chose to sit out. For years, the show has preserved its legacy as one of the most influential family sitcoms of its time, so there is genuine interest from old fans and new audiences who have come to adore the show to learn where the cast and characters of the series are now. Considering Cranston is involved in the creative side of the process, there is enough assurance that whatever idea he comes up with for a Malcolm in the Middle reunion, it will honor everything audiences loved about the show.
