Bruce Campbell Brings Zombie Warfare To The DCU in New Miniseries

A new partnership between Bruce Campbell and DC Comics is sure to have fans saying “Groovy!” The legendary actor is penning a new miniseries that will pit DC’s Sgt. Rock against an army of Nazi zombies, entitled DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead.

Campbell is obviously no stranger to undead menaces. Across a trilogy of movies, a television series, comics, video games and even a musical, Campbell became a horror icon for his portrayal as the wisecracking Ash Williams from the Evil Dead franchise. His popularity as the Deadite-hunting hero is so well-known, Campbell even wrote and directed My Name is Bruce, a film which the actor is mistaken for his demon-slaying counterpart. Though Bruce Campbell has “retired” the Ash Williams character, he’s still very active in the horror and film scene, even making a cameo in the recent Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness movie.

But just because fans won’t see Campbell portraying Ash anytime soon doesn’t mean the actor is done tangling with the undead. DC announced on their blog that the actor, along with artist Eduardo Risso, will be creating DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead. The story features DC’s greatest army leader Sgt. Franklin John Rock and his Easy Company fighting in Berlin in 1944. Facing defeat, Hitler has a serum created that can return his soldiers back to life, forcing Sgt. Rock and his men to fight against a hoard of Nazi zombies. DC promises a lot of shocks and thrills with the new miniseries, including a variant cover by Frank Quitely that’s too horrific for the publisher to even preview. The Walking Dead’s Charlie Adlard will also return to the zombie world with variant for the first issue, with other covers from Francesco Francavilla, Chris Mooneyham, and Pia Guerra with Gary Frank providing the main cover.

This won’t be Bruce Campbell’s first foray into the literary world as the actor has penned several autobiographies and fiction books. He’s even dipped his toes into the comic book sphere with The Hire: Precious Cargo and Man With The Screaming Brain. But this new miniseries is something that will no doubt be eagerly embraced by horror fans for the simple fact it mixes two beloved things: Bruce Campbell and zombies.

If there’s one thing that fans love about the actor, it’s that Bruce Campbell gives it his all with horror. Bruce Campbell’s over-the-top role in the Evil Dead movies are some of the most beloved in the entire genre. Campbell, in turn, has shown a huge love of his fans and is always eager to give the fans what they want. DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead sounds like a gift absolutely made for Evil Dead fans or just fans of Campbell’s larger than life persona. Bad times may be ahead for the DC Universe, but with Bruce Campbell leading the way, it’s certainly bound to be entertaining.

DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead #1 is available September 27, 2022.
