Brother Blood’s Titans Origin May Rule Out A Creepy Comic Storyline

Brother Blood’s Titans Origin May Rule Out A Creepy Comic Storyline

Warning: SPOILERS for Titans season 4.A change to the origin of Brother Blood makes it unlikely that one story from the comics will be adapted in Titans season 4. The episode “Super Super Mart” found Brother Blood, a.k.a. Sebastian Sanger, seeking shelter with the Titans after they rescued him from the clutches of Mother Mayhem. While the Titans anticipated he was about to become the next victim of the witch who stole Raven’s powers, he proved to have a much deeper connection to Raven and Mother Mayhem than they ever suspected.

In Titans season 4, episode 4, “Super Super Mart,” The Titans returned to the asylum once run by the Organization behind the Trigon cult, uncovering a hidden underground complex they had not explored before. The heroes discovered evidence that Raven’s mother was not the only woman impregnated by the demon Trigon as part of a prophecy to bring him to Earth, and they eventually deduced that Sanger was the son of Trigon. This makes him Raven’s half-brother. Therefore, it’s now highly unlikely that Titans will adapt one story from the comics where Brother Blood tried to marry Raven.

Brother Blood’s New Origin Makes Marrying Raven Unlikely

The second incarnation of Brother Blood encountered by the Titans in the comics, Sebastian Blood IX, was a teenage boy who was obsessed with Raven. It was this Brother Blood who revealed his cult’s secret connection to Trigon and his own plan to marry Raven and sire a child with her. It was Blood’s belief that this child would go on to conquer Earth in the name of Trigon and the Church of Blood.

With Sebastian Sanger and Raven confirmed to be half-siblings, it’s unlikely this story from the comics will be recreated in Titans. While HBO Max has hardly shied away from depicting incest (as seen in Game of Thrones) such a thing would be a step too far even for the gritty reality of Titans. The current storyline involving Brother Blood and Mother Mayhem is disturbing enough without the addition of a villain scheming to force himself on a teenage girl.

Another reason the story of Brother Blood wanting to marry Raven is unlikely to be adapted for Titans season 4 lies in the conflict between Raven and Mother Mayhem. It has been made clear that Mother Mayhem sees Raven as an obstacle in the way of her plans for Sebastian. She referred to Raven as “the heretic” in Titans season 4, episode 3, “Jinx,” and rejoiced in having stolen Raven’s powers, saying “she had no right to it.” The flashbacks in Titans season 4, episode 4, “Super Super Mart,” also made it clear that Mother Mayhem’s cult does not share the Trigon cult’s beliefs regarding Raven’s importance.

New episodes of Titans premiere Thursdays on HBO Max.
