Brooklyn 99 Season 8 Poster & Title Make Good Use Of Long-Running Joke

While fans will be sad to see Brooklyn Nine-Nine go, the sitcom just revealed season 8’s title in a video using a long-running joke from the series. In February, NBC announced that the eighth season of the procedural-cop comedy would be its last and it would premiere on August 12. Brooklyn Nine-Nine was originally canceled by Fox after five seasons in 2018 and was picked up by NBC after a massive social media campaign called for its renewal.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine has had major success in documenting the eccentricities of a team of detectives in New York City’s fictional 99th precinct. The series won a Golden Globe for Best Television Series in its first season, with Andy Samberg starring as detective Jake Peralta. The series has been acclaimed for its portrayal of sensitive subjects with humor, including its LGBTQ+ representation. Yet, despite its NYPD setting, the subject of police brutality has been addressed only moderately. Terry Crews, who stars as Lieutenant Terry Jeffords, spoke previously about the eighth season’s rectification of the issue in the wake of George Floyd’s murder. Co-creator Dan Goor scrapped four episodes of the prepared final season to focus on finding a balance between comedy and serious police brutality conversations.

Now, the Brooklyn Nine-Nine Instagram account has revealed exactly what the final season is going to look like, and fans will recognize the season’s tagline, “One Last Ride,” as part of the show’s recurring Title of Your Sex Tape joke. However, even more devoted viewers will notice another joke watching Joel McKinnon Miller, who plays Norm Scully, complete a puzzle of the season’s poster. In the show, the notoriously lazy detective attributes his “defined wrist muscles” to his extraordinary jigsaw capabilities. The Instagram video makes it clear that the upcoming season will be filled with much of the same humor that has contributed to the show’s massive success in the past.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s final season will premiere with two back-to-back episodes, presumably because NBC hopes that the Olympics will draw in viewers. However, there shouldn’t be too much to worry about given that the last season reached an audience of 24 million. The exceptional ensemble cast will be returning for the eighth season as well, including Melissa Fumero, Joe Lo Truglio, Stephanie Beatriz, Dirk Blocker, and of course jigsaw expert Joel McKinnon Miller.

Though the final season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine promises to confront issues like police brutality and systemic inequality, fans can trust that the writers have been able to protect the delicate nature of these topics without sacrificing the tone of the show. As more information is revealed about the upcoming season, hopefully there will be more jokes for viewers who have been along for the ride the entire time.
